I feel like I need to explain why this movie worked...for what it was.
Don't get me wrong, there was plenty of stupid in this movie and I fully admit I enjoy it more than I should. I just don't see how it's particularly awful.
But more importantly, there is no other series (that I can think of at least) that so desperately needs the occasional extremely different sort of event or plot or anything like that. There can always be too much of a good thing, so if it was just a version of what you see in the anime all the time but with explosions and better art(*cough* Movie 12, parts of 5 *cough*), that wouldn't be as interesting, not worthy of this huge, advertised to death movie. Because once you get past the overuse of characters that don't do anything (Kogoro, Haibara and Sato/Takagi's were the only ones that felt particularly pointless imo), and the stupid action scenes (too many, way too dumb, makes movie 13's climax look like a masterpiece), you have a story that's Conan and Kid and friends vs. Terrorists. And I think that story was done fairly well. It had have some fairly interesting twists, some decent suspense and was just a good story outside of Conan's ability to avoid bullets. However, that's not enough to save the movie from being average at best.
Kid being incredibly awesome is though. After Kirin's horn I thought I was done caring about Kid anymore (and that might still be true as movies aren't canon). But, every single thing Kid did in this movie was just awesome and so fun to watch. Quite fitting that he stole the show. And he is probably the best example of this movie not being a 2 hour version of the anime with added explosions.
His role in the movie avoided problems with the manga.
Is finding out who Kid is going to take up way too much time?
He's revealed in like a minute.
Is he not gonna be around much after that? Not enough maybe but he still did quite a bit and the saving Conan scene up to getting him back inside the blimp was pratically just about Conan and Kid, forced to be friends to battle terrorists.
Well surely there must be some silly trick involving how Kid gets the jewel, right? They're tied up. He grabs it.
Well, enough about Kid, how unoriginal will Ran's part be? ...well, Kid tricks her into thinking he's Shinichi which probably makes more sense than the truth, she ends up almost kissing him and it is an interesting, clever storyline that makes sense considering past continuity and especially references to Kid's appearance. They avoid making her a DiD too, or at the very least do it in a much more clever way.
