DC Specials Contest

Postby dilbertschalter » June 27th, 2010, 9:51 pm

With the DC movie contest ending (barring some ridiculous cheating, Countdown to Heaven will have won the contest in a few hours), I feel like the time is ripe for a new contest. This time, the idea is to pit the DC specials against each other, in the same single elimination format used in the movie contest. Before starting, I'd like to go over a few issues/get some feedback on the idea.

-Currently, there are 28 DC specials (technically 29, but there is no point in counting 521 and 522 as separate). Not included in that are two of the most popular DC cases, Desperate Revival and Clash of Red and Black, as well as some other notable cases (309-311, 136-137, 176-178, etc;). I am unsure as to whether I should add some popular multipart cases (if I did, I would add 4 to make the contest have 32, which is a good number for an elimination contest) or simply leave the number of contestants at 28. Opinions on that would be appreciated.
-Tiebreak procedure. For the movie contest, I used box office gross as a tiebreak. Though we only had one (highly controversial) tie, I feel like this contest would have more ties given the greater number of faceoffs that would be required; there would also be obscure episodes that wouldn't generate much interest. If I were to follow in the footsteps of the movie contest, TV ratings would be the tiebreaker, but a) I don't know where I would find ratings for each episode and b) that doesn't really feel like a good tiebreak. Again, suggestions would be nice.
-Issues with the movie contest. What were things about the design and format off the movie contest that could have been improved?

"The energies of our system will decay; the glory of the sun will be dimmed, and the earth, tideless and inert, will no longer tolerate the race which has for a moment disturbed its solitude. Man will go down into the pit, and all his thoughts will perish. The uneasy consciousness, which in this obscure corner has for a brief space broken the contented silence of the universe, will be at rest. Matter will know itself no longer. 'Imperishable monuments' and 'immortal deeds,' death itself, and love stronger than death, will be as though they had never been."

None of them stand a chance outside of 129, 304 and 345.

But I guess that doesn't make it any different from the other contests.  :P

I don't know about specials, but it would be kinda interesting to do it with the OVAs.   It would show which is the most liked & most hated.  Plus since there's an even number of them right now, it'll be easier to do.

My one suggestion about the format from the Movie contest is to keep the results hidden.  It builds suspense and deters strategic voting.

I would say adding some multi-part cases wouldn't be such a bad idea, especially if it makes it easier.

Yeah, those three are the top contenders, and even then it'll be pretty shocking if 345 doesn't win.

I agree on the strategic voting part, but I think the overall effect on the contest is positive. It's true, blowouts can be boring, but a neck contest is a great way to generate interest and excitement. I'm probably going to keep the results viewable format, though I'm not 100% set on it.

As I've decided to include 4 non-specials to fill the bracket, here is the list of 32, with the 28 specials+4 notable arcs. Do comment if I've omitted something (be it a special I forgot or an arc that deserves recognition).

1. 11-Moonlight Sonata (1 hour special)
2. 52-The Mist Goblin Legend Murder Case (1 hour special)
3. 76-Conan vs. Kaitou Kid (1 hour special)
4. 92-Caught up with the Great Detective! Two Murder Cases (2 hour special)
5. 118-The Naniwa Serial Murder Case (1 hour special)
6. 129-The Girl from the Black Organization and the University Professor Murder Case (2 hour special)
7. 162-The Sealed Chamber in the Sky! Shinichi Kudo's First Case (1 hour special)
8. 174-The 20 Year Old Murder Case: The Symphony Serial Murders (2 hour special)
9. 176-178-Reunion with the Black Organization (3 part case)
10. 184-A Cursed Mask Laughs Coldly (1 hour special)
11. 188-193-The Desperate Revival (6 part case)
12. 208-The Entrance to the Maze: The Anger of Colossus (1 hour special)
13. 219-Gathered Great Detectives! Shinichi Kudo vs. Kaitou Kid (2 hour special)
14. 263-The Osaka Double Mystery - Naniwa Swordsman and Toyotomi's Castle (2 hour special)
15. 304-Trembling Metropolitan Police Headquarters 12 Million Hostages (2 hour special)
16. 309-311-Contact with the Black Organization (3 part case)
17. 342-Bride of Huis Ten Bosch (1 hour special)
18. 345-Head-to-Head Match With the Black Organization; Two Mysteries of the Night of the Full Moon (2.5 hour special)
19. 356-Kaitou Kid's Miracle Midair Walk (1 hour special)
20. 383-Miracle at Koshien Ball Park! The Defiants Face the Dark Demon (2 hour special)
21. 425-Black Impact! The Moment the Black Organization Reaches Out (2.5 hour special)
22. 449-Metropolitan Police Love Story - Fake Wedding (1 hour special)
23. 452-The Phantom of the Theater (1 hour special)
24. 479-Three Days with Hattori Heiji (2 hour special)
25. 487-Metropolitan Police Detective Love Story 8 Left Hand's Ring Finger (1 hour special)

I'm going to be one of the predictable ones that votes 345 all the way through.  ;D But I'm interested to see how far some of these will go.

If you're going to include this, you should probably include 176-178: Reunion with the Black Organization.  It introduces Vermouth and is the only time Haibara has ever changed back, so it's pretty notable...

I think 309-311 deserves a spot, as it features something quite unique- Shinichi being utterly defenseless and at the mercy of his enemies. In the other episodes where we see him in danger, he always has some degree of control and some amount of protection (even 425). In 311, however, he is cornered and can do basically nothing to improve his own chance of survival. 309-311 also has fewer logical inconsistencies than 176-178, which gives a bit a of an edge.

I agree. It'd take out the Mermaid 3 parter which seems pretty insignificant in comparaison.

Why do you have The Desperate Revival and Clash listed? You said in the first post that would be excluded (as it should be, it's a series of episodes and not really a special).

Edit: Maybe I misread your first post, but I do think they don't really count as specials in the same way as the others listed were.
