Who says? Like I wrote in the Ai thread, for every Agasa saying he was respected, there's a Megure and Yuminaga thinking/saying outright that he sucked. I think if Kogoro ever actually had a good reputation, it was for bravery instead of investigation skills, or it was with people who didn't know Yusaku/Eri/someone was actually solving the cases.

I really think he's more suited to acting/professional celebrity than detective work, though if he blows a case publicly he might not even keep his current level of fame.

Though movie 2 kinda gave a reason for him leaving the force too.

In the flashbacks in episodes 472-473, he's seen to be doing his job very competently, and the same can be said for movie 2 if you take that as canon. Even if you don't take movie 2 as canon, it's still been implied in the manga that he left the force around the time he broke up with Eri, which from a psychologist's point of view is no coincidence.

Well, he was professional enough to report for duty at odd hours. Doesn't mean he had much to do with solving the case, or that the case wasn't a straightforward witnesses-identified-the-culprit-and-the-fingerprints-on-the-weapon-match case. (We know Yusaku pulled the phone plug so he didn't help the police then, though.)

Eri makes it pretty clear that his drinking, and how he acts while drunk, was the primary reason she left him. It probably got worse after she left, but it was already a problem (Ran tells Eri that she already knows how he gets when he's drunk in ep. 199 , and Eri mentions he'd use a recording try to trick her so he could stay out all night drinking in ep. 529/530 (strong hint there that he acted out that way because he didn't think she was giving him enough attention, so it could've started once she started working as a full blown trial lawyer, right about the time of the 472-473 flashback)).

Regardless, we know Megure didn't respect his investigation skills, immediately contradicting Agasa's claim about Kogoro being a talented police detective. I'd think we'd have gotten one of Kogoro's former associates thinking, "Too bad he burned out, he had so much potential as an investigator," or a, "You finally made it as a meitantei, I knew you had it in you despite the rough end to your time on the force," instead of, "WTF, he's still trying to be a private detective," or, "You caused me no end of problems," by now if that were really the case...
