but I'm here to contend that Gin and Vodka's names are not canon. below, a quote from the "Lab/Love Conan" fanbook, p. 77:

TRANSLATION
Interviewer "Talk about Gin, we don't even know about his nationality, right?"
Aoyama "oh, from my inside settings he is called 'Kurosawa Jin' (laugh). HAHAHA."
Interviewer "(Laugh) Whaaat! So Gin is in fact a name?! If I remember well, there was such a name as Uozuka Saburou that reminds Vodka... (hiragana うおつか/katakana ウォッカ)"
Aoyama "Ah~. I drew the register, I drew it! Oh, it's not visible but beside Uozuka Saburou there was Kurosawa Jin written. The fact is. HAHAHAHA (laugh).

Topic bump, but can anyone verify this?

Fujiwara revisits the mermaid guestbook

Postby Chekhov MacGuffin » June 27th, 2013, 4:33 pm

Transcript from the cbox, cut to the most relevant points with minor fixes.

Chekhov MacGuffin: (27 Jun 13, 13:51) The mermaid guestbook came up again. What did I screw up, Fuji? http://www.detectiveconanworld.com/foru ... /?p=295425

Chekhov MacGuffin: (27 Jun 13, 13:53) It came up in regards to Q3 from this site: http://anokata.xxxxxxxx.jp/faq.html

Chekhov MacGuffin: (27 Jun 13, 13:55) If I didn't mess anything up, I'm going to have to go back on my previous words that Vodka wasn't in the guestbook. Of course, a pun like that is probably not his real name, even though Sherry used her real name.

Fujiwara: (27 Jun 13, 14:10) Awesome find that. My remarks: 魚塚 is definitely a play on Vodka just as you described. That's because it's not, in fact, a Japanese surname. I.e. no one uses it.

Fujiwara: (27 Jun 13, 14:12)
It could be read differently from Uotsuka, of course, but given how it's not an actual name and it's position in the guest book, either Vodka wrote it or it was a joke by Gosho, it was definitely intentional.

Chekhov MacGuffin: (27 Jun 13, 14:12 - 27 Jun 13, 14:14) I noticed Wikipedia turned up zero people with the name. I'm guessing it was probably Vodka judging by the context. Shiho probably would get an escort. The elephant in the room is if the Gin part is true though. As in the name on the far right. Per the interview given in Q3 here: http://anokata.xxxxxxxx.jp/faq.html
I doubt Vodka would use his real name, even if Shiho did.

Fujiwara: (27 Jun 13, 14:15) No, since Vodka is a codename it would make no sense for it to be his real name. Esp. given how it's not, actually, a name that people use.

Chekhov MacGuffin: (27 Jun 13, 14:16) By the way this might be useful: http://www.detectiveconanworld.com/wiki ... _manga.PNG

Fujiwara: (27 Jun 13, 14:18) Yes, well, all I can say is that the part of the next name that you see matches the Kanji for Kurosawa Jin (黒澤陣).

Fujiwara: (27 Jun 13, 14:30) But, yeah, the Gin thing woud really depend on the veracity of that interview, since you can only see the tiny part of the name and the original rumor might have been based on that bit ...

Chekhov MacGuffin: (27 Jun 13, 14:35) If you have any more remarks, now would be a good time

Fujiwara: (27 Jun 13, 14:38) Well, there's alternate readings for the given name, I suppose, but Saburou seems the most prevalent and none of them give off any BO vibe. Here they are though: Mitsuo, Sanrou, Kazuo

Thanks for this, Chekhov and Fujiwara.

My input: When I talked about "extensive research" back in the other thread, I was mostly looking for this "fanbook" everyone's talking about, and this is the conclusion of what I currently know (of course take what I say with a grain of salt lol, but hopefully it will provide some background information before anyone else wants to take a stab at it. I'll also include my sources so anyone could correct my mistakes easier, if any):

I've been running around Amazon checking out the the fanbook in concern, "Love Conan," since I know very little about it.
As far as I can find, there are 5 books under the name Love Conan, the first 2 of the following listed are edited by the キャラデパmia編集部 (KyaraDepa mia editorial dept. KyaraDepa could be short for Character Department.) I'm not sure about the latter three.

The first one is Rabu=Conan --- Meitantei Conan Official Fanbook for Girls (Wonder Life Special) (Mook) (2004/03)
(The Japanese made the word Mook through combining the words Magazine and Book.)
As the name suggests, its target audience is girls.
Three 5☆ reviews, one 4☆ and one 1☆.
Content of the book seems to include (according to one review) Rankings, Intro to Character and Goods, Love stories, and goods-ordering list etc.
The one-star talks about how cringy this book is, only talks about romance aspects of DC and ignores the interesting parts.
One of the five-star reviews talks about Aoyama sensei denying Conan x Haibara and wants to read the rest of the Rabu Conan series (I will come back to this later)
One five-star review mentions there is a 4-page interview with Aoyama sensei at the end. The title of the interview seems to be "Please tell us! Aoyama sensei" according to another review, and also a Wikipedia source.

(Source #30 at time of writing)

I'll keep the other 4 in spoiler tags because I don't think they're that important. Tl;dr summary: Rabu Conan has 2 official DC movie guides I can find on Amazon.

Spoiler:
The second one is called Rabu Conan Seal Book (Full Seal Book) (2004/07.) In Japan, seals are basically kinda like stickers, but you can peel them off easily later.

http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%83%A9%E3%83 ... 564&sr=1-1

The third is titled Rabu・Conan THE MOVIE Seal Book (2008/04.) I don't see any information about the editorial dept, other than Aoyama Gosho being mentioned.

http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%83%A9%E3%83 ... =pd_cp_b_0

The last two I find are both called Rabu・Conan the movie Theatrical Meitantei Conan Official Fanbook (This Is Animation) (One of them has the word "Deduction" in the title.) (2007/04 and 2008/04, presumably right after DC movies premiers in April.) The one and only 3-star review on the 2007/04 says she's bought Rabu Conan before and prefer that instead, but not sure if she's referring to more Movie guides prior to 2007 or the Official Fanbook for Girls.

About キャラデパmia編集部 (KyaraDepa mia editorial dept)

According to this Yahoo question: http://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp/qa ... 3101534043
The asker asks, in which issue of Rabu Conan page 77 does Kurosawa Jin appear. He also says there are "many" issues, so he doesn't know which one.
(Note: I wonder if this increases the credibility on the Rabu Conan magazines?)

The reply to the question says they have the 2004 issue, so I suppose they do DC mag at least once a year. The reply says, in the 2004 issue, page 77 does mention the name Kurosawa Jin. But there is no mention about whether being a code name or real name. However! Aoyama does admit to the name being Gin's "urasettei" (Eng: behind-the-scene character setting.) The Anokataxxx website says the same thing as well.

About http://anokata.xxxxxxxx.jp/
- Last update was 2012-12-31
- Under the second tab in the left panel, there is a collection of 2ch threads pertaining Anokata's real identity. The latest thread is created on 2012-12-28, last post (#981) 2013-05-29, so it's pretty up to date as far as that is concerned. The 'owner' of the is anokata.xxxxxxxx.jp (they keep a copy because you need to pay on 2ch to read old threads.)

Edit: I totally didn't see the translation post two posts before this @[email protected] so I've deleted my version since that's accurate.

My afterwords:
Hope this provides enough insight for better judgement with regards to the fanbook "Love Conan." If the interview does appear in the 2004 issue, then I highly doubt they would get away with making up a random interview with Aoyama sensei lol.

I'm actually not too concerned about their real names, but the implication behind their appearance on the Mermaid island. To have Gin and Sherry appearing at such a random place that has an fantastical backstory makes me wonder about the Org's motives. And the possibility of the BO boss appearing on scene (Ooguro Rentarou??) But one other possibility is that, Gin and Sherry are here to come in contact (for whatever reason) with the big guns in the top-most social class, and doesn't necessarily mean BO boss is there.

T/L Note: Urasettei = behind-the-scene setting. Usually refers to the unreleased materials that is canon with the plot.

There actually is an interview in the Detective Conan Official Fanbook LOVE Conan published in 2004. Here's a photo of part of the interview that talks about Gin's name.

I have the photo in my computer. How do I post it here?

I wouldn't normally bump an old thread to answer a 6 month old question, but yangti1674 is still active, and I'm not going to take my chances missing him. I just saw this answer while searching old threads and this interview is like the Yeti, talked about, but never seen.

Yangti1674 you will have the easiest time if you post the image to Imgur. http://imgur.com/
It's easy to do, here is a video tutorial (slightly different site layout but still applies.): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GL5HjTNtvs

Re: Help with the guestbook names from the mermaid case

I was reviewing this dead thread today, and noticed how HADAA had commented way back in 2012 about the name on the far left looked like an alias Kaitou Kid used once.

8 Aug 2012, 13:20
HADAA: Tidbit: Number 49 is Miyano Shiho and Number 50 looks suspiciously like 土井塔 (Doitou, and with 克樹 Kakki it would become the alias used by Kid once), but at this point I think Gosho prolly simply ran out of names or just inserted random easter eggs, like we did with our movie releases

Kaitou Kid would be interested in an immortality arrow/grandma legend, even though it isn't a big jewel. The only problem is that the logbook in question must have been at least one year older than case present, as the current logbooks were missing (stolen by a suspect). I don't think Kuroba Kaito could have been active as the current Kaitou Kid hunting for Pandora one year ago. He started up less than one year ago if I remember correctly (and no one else in the Kuroba family knew about Pandora's immortality legend before Kaito eavesdropped on the MK org after blue wonder). Still though, if you are willing to fudge the timeline a bit, Kaito might have run into Shiho before the train case, as well as Gin and Vodka since their numbers were adjacent.

Sorry for necroing a dead thread.

If you mean the manga panel, it's from the mermaid case: Volume 28, files 6-10 (279-283).

That's the famous guestbook everyone talks about with some mysterious names written next to that of Haibara, who came to the island before meeting Conan, when she was in the BO. It's speculated that they might've investigated the legend of an arrow that grants eternal life.

No, I actually meant the coloured page beneath the B&W panel… thank you for answering nonetheless! :)

@TanteiSa: from what I see, it's a book titled "Love Conan" but I don't know what's about. Maybe it's supposed to contain the interview in question, hence why it's linked to the manga panel.

We need a batlight, but for Yunnie.

Postby Chekhov MacGuffin » July 20th, 2017, 9:11 pm

Bumping this because Yunnie had something interesting to say about puns and the guestbook names, and I want her to see the thread. If she doesn't post I'll update this with my best understanding of the results, but I'd rather defer to an expert first.
