CONFIRMED: The teaser at the end of Movie 17 in theaters is one for "Lupin the Third vs. Detective Conan: The Movie". No mention is made of Movie 18, which we can likely expect will be teased at the end of Lupin vs. Conan in December.

But by the time 'Lupin III vs Conan' hits theaters the first 30s trailer for movie 18 should already be out (as well as the poster and all that). Maybe this year they'll do it differently and keep it as an exclusive until then.

Movie 17's first trailer only came out at the very, very end of November and was only revealed a couple of weeks before that if I recall, so them delaying it a matter of days and at most weeks isn't too hard to imagine. I guess we'll see in the end.

That makes sense. It should be a matter of 2 or 3 weeks as they will probably want to release the movie around mid-december in order for it to benefit from the new-year break not too late in its run.

Weekend Estimates (4/20-21)

Image

1 (-) Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea (Toho) ¥641 million ($6.6 million), 0, DEBUT!
2 (-) Crayon Shin-chan: Very Tasty! Gourmet Survival Class (Toho) ¥217 million ($2.2 million), 0, DEBUT!
3 (-) Lincoln (Disney) ¥171 million ($1.8 million), 0, DEBUT!
4 (1) Dragonball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) ¥145 million ($1.5 million), -36%, Week 4
5 (2) Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) ¥104 million ($1.1 million), -38%, Week 5
6 (3) We Knit Ship (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) ¥72 million ($735,000), -37%, Week 2
7 (4) Platinum Data (Toho) ¥53 million ($540,000), -43%, Week 6
8 (5) Chinese Zodiac (Kadokawa Pictures) ¥48 million ($485,000), -47%, Week 2
9 (6) Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥44 million ($450,000), -50%, Week 7
10 (7) Aibou Series: X-Day (Toei) ¥42 million ($430,000), -48%, Week 5

Well, well. If this estimate holds, Detective Conan just set a franchise opening record. Literally ever major anime film released since November have been breaking franchise records on opening weekend and in total gross. This year's film will have no problem earning over ¥3 billion ($35 million) again. This also marks the 7th-consecutive weekend an animated film has been #1 at the box-office, and the 12th time out of the past 18 weekends.

Saturday Estimates (4/20)

1 Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea (Toho) ¥284 million ($3.0 million), 0, DEBUT!
2 Crayon Shin-chan: Very Tasty! Gourmet Survival Class (Toho) ¥85 million ($870,000), 0, DEBUT!
3 Lincoln (Disney) ¥83 million ($850,000), 0, DEBUT!
4 Dragonball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) ¥81 million ($825,000), -31%, Week 4
5 Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) ¥67 million ($685,000), -20%, Week 5
6 We Knit Ship (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) ¥46 million ($470,000), -18%, Week 2
7 Platinum Data (Toho) ¥34 million ($345,000), -28%, Week 6
8 Chinese Zodiac (Kadokawa Pictures) ¥28 million ($285,000), -38%, Week 2
9 Aibou Series: X-Day (Toei) ¥26 million ($265,000), -35%, Week 5
10 Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥24 million ($245,000), -45%, Week 7

Great number for Detective Conan. The opening day estimate is 5% higher than the 2011 film, and 12% lower than last year's film (last year's film opened on a Movix Cinema discount day, however). It should be able to clear ¥550 million (about $6 million) and 450,000 admissions for the weekend. I made a mistake in the weekend forecast saying that this is the 16th Detective Conan film when it's actually the 17th.

Now let's see if it has the legs to live up to this promising opening week-end. Last year's movie ended up having a rather average run after its record breaking OW. Just to compare :

OW/Final gross
Movie 6 : ¥416,139,512 / ¥3.4 billion
Movie 16 : ¥620,457,284 / ¥3.3 billion

OMG no no no NO!I found some spoiler on a Chinese fans' Facebook page about the movie and movie 18
Spoiler:
I haven't seen the movie so this is all second hand info.
They hired a new writer so there were many changes......so the big no is on the scene where Conan seems to be sweating in the trailer....or I thought because Conan NEVER cries!! HE DID! OMG why did they do that!? Is Gosho ok with that!?
Not a big action movie, more on the case and deduction (YAY!) People have said it's more complicated than the previous films
Action scene is mainly on Ran vs. Spy
Heiji and Kazuha is separate investigating on land like movie 14, but this time with more scenes. People have said that Heiji's got some great scenes and there's some romantic moment like Kazuha crying in Heiji's arm!?!?!
Very few scenes on the Detective Group (YAY), Haibara (No!) and Kogoro

On trailers:
Tokyo Skyeetree being targeted through a scope.....they said it was for movie 18....

That actually sounds pretty good. Which is weird since I think movie 6 or 7 is the last movie that I think sounds good on paper.

I really enjoy the military aspects in the Movie.
Spoiler:
Bloggers reported that young audience didn't like the whole ''Conan saving Japan'' though. They said they looked pretty bored. It must have been hard on them. Gosho worried about this in a recent interview regarding Movie 17 too.

Spoiler:
Screw the kiddies, we can have a movie not specifically made for them sometimes. :P The last like 3 or 4 movies were very child orientated (with 14 taking it down to an entire new level) so good on them for changing that a bit once in a while.

Weekend Ranking (4/20-21)

1 (-) Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea (Toho) DEBUT!
2 (-) Crayon Shin-chan: Very Tasty ! Gourmet Survival Class (Toho) DEBUT!
3 (-) Lincoln (Disney) DEBUT!
4 (1) Dragonball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) Week 4
5 (2) Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) Week 5
6 (3) We Knit Ship (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) Week 2
7 (-) Steins; Gate: Fuka Ryoiki no Deja vup (Kadokawa Pictures) DEBUT!
8 (4) Chinese Zodiac (Kadokawa Pictures) Week 2
9 (6) Platinum Data (Toho) Week 6
10 (5) Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) Week 7

Detective Conan opens higher than estimates and sets a franchise record in both gross and admissions, opening 6.6% higher than last year's film. It earned a splendid ¥671,548,700 ($6.86 million) / 565,914 admissions over the weekend on 344 screens. This opening will allow the film to cruise over ¥3 billion ($32 million) and likely reach ¥3.5 billion ($37 million). I don't know what it is, but this is the year for anime films that's for sure. They just keep breaking records.

It's main audience were people in the 20s (26.6%), followed by 16-19 year olds (22.7%), and finally those in their 40s (16.8%)

Japan will probably end up being the biggest overseas market for that movie.

Really? Why? An honest question, by the way, not trying to be sarcastic.

Because ticket prices are quite high in Japan (which is why in admissions it probably won't be the first overseas market) and because its opening is actually ok and with Golden Week coming up it should have a decent run.
