It is sad on the other hand, but isn´t it also on the other kinda romantic cause it´s mature? Giving up on the one you love when you realize the only thing you are able to give her is sadness and despair. I didn´t cry i thought *Oha, he get it now? Oh, he already forgot it in the next chap.*.
I have often the feeling that he is too protective of Ran, not in a romantic *i believe in her no matter what*-way but in a *HANDS OFF! She´s mine and only my prope-erm future wife!*-way. Especially with Araide and Eisuke i had that feeling. Dunno, if he loves her so much and knows so much more about her by now as he would have ever be possible to get knwoing when he was Shinichi, why can´t he trust her with all his heart?
Same for Ran in some parts of the story, but she has the excuse to know his *old (not so great)* self and to not know about his current situation, he not.

I DO think that he trusts her with all his heart..
Of course thats why its romantic. If they would be together since the first episode with no waiting and so on, believe me i would never be such a fan of them like i am now.. =))

But it's such a beautifully sad sentiment... after all, he's there every day to see how much she hurts, and he can't do anything about it except be the "comforting little brother" figure... but maybe he should tell her, y'know? I mean, frankly, the BO now suspect Kogoro as well, so what she doesn't know may be more dangerous to her than what she does know. If they found out who Conan was, would they not just silence everyone around him anyway, just to be safe?

Good point with the own body and own voice. But before he does that, he have to tell her why he was so long away from her. If he don´t do that and confess to her cause he KNOWS that she won´t dump him since he already knows she loves him, but doesn´t want to tell her first about that fact, i so gonna take him from first place in my heart to last. I would´t cheer on for such a asshat.
The thing about Shinichi and Ran is that they're so ridiculous xD.
To start with I'll say Shinichi and Ran are similar, they both like to go into burning buildings to save people they aren't suppose to like very much (Moonlight Sonata/Shinchi's first love). They're both very kind, very stubborn, have a strong sense of justice, and have no sense of self preservation. They also have a tendency to befriend everyone and care for everyone.
So we have two people who jumps into fires that don't want the other person jumping in fire but will do so themselves because "it's okay if I die for others, but it's not okay for you to die for others".
Aren't they absolutely silly xD? I really love these two. I especially love the fan arguments regarding them. I really enjoy fandom sometimes.
If Shinichi says "I'll come back even if I'm dead" people will be all like OMG SO ROMANTIC. If Ran cries tells him DON'T YOU DARE DIE KUDOU SHINICHI people will say she's clingy. But if Ran does a "I'll wait for you even if I'm dead" and Shinchi goes all emo he's not considered clingy at all.
