I like the moment where Ai is crying and clinching on Conans chest and he looks above, a unpredictable look on his face and he do nothing to comfort her.
You may wonder why i "like" this one, it was really sad still touching not so fluffy, funny and cute like other moments which should be worth mention them.
But for me it was the first time we saw something about Ai
AND Conan we didn´t know till that moment. Of cource Ai was new to the story to that point and everyone was sure she will be his partner in need and such, but with the crying out loud and her now useless question to him she showed her vulnerable side, the one she´s always hiding. With that i just knew she wouldn´t only stay as "the one who will give him the antidote and that´s it". Let´s say it was the first glimpse of her character deepth and developpement.
As for Conan, it showed way better that he´s not the
great hero of justice like most thinks of him then the times where Akemi was shot or when that dude who was disguised as a woman doctor at the island died in the fire. By both he did get it, he solved the riddles, grasped the meaning to the mysterys behind them and "tried" to save them though he wasn´t able to. But he did something to save them, mostly it didn´t work cause time is a bitch (lol) and wasn´t working in his favor "Maybe if i were earlier there..." "Maybe if i was just a bit faster with the calculating..." "...they would still live..." "...so it´s my fault they´re dead." is what Conan/Shinichi is thinking or at least i believe so.
What i want to say is that there he solved the case wholly and wasn´t able to save them out of circumstances. While here in that case he wasn´t able to solve all mysterys, he did had the infos (we all get it of cource cause of the background image back then in the Akemi case but still they were more infos then that) like the name of the prof he was calling, the mention from Ai that her sister died some time before and such. He did remember Akemi in the case before that one and Ai looked that him like she was waiting for a reaction of him when she said the name of the prof. He had one but only a nagging thought jumping saltos inside his head.
When Ai started to cry, when she asked him the question he still didn´t get it, he get it after she told him everything. It was so unlike the other cases where he got his doubt and grieve, there he knew about it all and just couldn´t stop it even though he tried.
But in this one he had no clue, he didn´t get the puzzle together, he was just at a loss of thoughts. Saying it the hard way;
he failed to solve the mystery.
The difference is that even after knowing all the facts he didn´t even tried to do anything at all (like comfort her; maybe it was the right decision, maybe not. Who knows after all?), he stood there, doing nothing though he and also she believed it was (partly) his fault, that they are here now in this room, her crying and him starring at the ceiling (with a sorrowful look? Like i said i think of it as unprediticable, but sorrowful would be the nearest thing for it).
It showed more how much human he is then when he failed to save the other two. Cause back then you can always say, "he did solved the case. If he had a bit faster then maybe it wouldn´t have ended that way. It wasn´t his fault."
Here it´s the other way around, he didn´t solve the mystery even though it was nagging inside him (Ai cried so herself "YOU STILL DON`T GET IT!?") and when he had the mystery solved before his feet (i mean that word-wordly, she was crying before his feet after all XP) and he could have do something to change the results maybe only a tiny bit he chose to do nothing (as a hero of justice and truth who didn´t get it, it was a remarkable and very human decision cause it shows his helplessness, in my eyes at least). Who knows why, maybe he tought it would be better for her to cry it out all loud, maybe he thought it is better when she has someone to blame for her heavy loss, maybe he
wanted that someone blames him after all (something that didn´t happend after the cases which he "lost", he could only blame himself), maybe he just didn´t know what to do at all.
Him doing "nothing"- showing his (real) helpless side (my opinion)- was something he hadn´t done so far in the story also he never did it again after that. Ai crying rivers- showing her hurtful and heartaching side- was also something she never did before (from the flash-backs we saw so far) also we never see her doing so to this extension again. I guess it was even the only time we could see her "true" face without mask to hide it.
Same for Conan, he´s always the cool guy who knows it all and will save the day, but seeing him like that gives me the thought he don´t think that highly of himself, he is just acting like Ai.
He plays a role- the hero role- the one who all can depend on, the one who will always do something or thinks of something to solve the situation, to save the day, to make the tears disappear on the ones he loves. He wants to be that kind of hero, but appartently he isn´t and he thinks so too.
Before you say "Are you insane? Don´t you see him always sloving the cases and saving the others?" he said so himself... TWICE! One time it was to Heiji refering to his "This statement fits a perfect human being like you.", there he thought of the woman doc who killed himself, who were "driven into death cause of his dectuctions". "Nobody is perfect and i´m no exception."
That was his answer to that. But that is so contra towards all his actions he´s doing, he can turn a situation which is completley against him and his allies into his favor, he´s ready risking his life for strangers, he doesn´t want others see hurt and so on and so on. That´s the picture we usually see of him in almost every case in the manga. I think so too, i alwas forget he´s like the others with faults, grieve, angst, fear, unsure feelings. We all (I assume so only, correct me if i´m wrong) see him usually as someone... someone who´s able to do
ANYTHING. Someone who will come like always butting out of nowhere, smirking and saying his line "
There´s only one truth." and saving the day and let the tears of the maiden disappear.
The second time was to Ai when she said cause of the valentines chocolate and his worry face "Don´t be worried about her. I don´t know what tagaki said to you, but keep your act together. When she knows your identity she´s in danger as mcuh as us. But i see, you´re in heaven seven after receiving her chocolate."
"No way. I did take it, but now she miss me even more. I couldn´t do anything to let her tears vanish. I can´t see her tears anymore...
i would even be happy when she forget me as long as i don´t see her crying anymore."
The first thing, it was also mine first thought, that comes into your mind is: What a noble hero, what a great knight! Someone who would even be fine losing her love to him when its worth to let clear out her dispair and sadness. He´s truly worthy of her love. (<- for the ShinRan-fans^^, again i can be wrong, maybe you didn´t thought so)
But now see this statement in the contest with everything i said so far, with the first time he neglicted that he´s the kind of hero, the others sees in him.
Doesn´t that means he thinks he´s not worthy of her love? Doesn´t he believe since he´s the cause of her tears, he has no right to stand at her side? Doesn´t admitting that even though he has taken her chocolate he wasn´t able to reach that what he wanted?
Seeing her without tears in her eyes.
Remember, when he saw her crying, his face reminded me of that time when he let Ai cry. This time, he didn´t did nothing, he took action and his own words are meaning that he thinks it did made the situation even worse. The other way around again.
Ai´s thoughts when he said "Quite funny, ne?" about his own words was "No... it´s damm sad." with a small (dunno what, sad, sorrowful, pity?) smile on her face. If you see it only like that, then it seems to be sad out and only cause he wants Ran to forget him to save her in the end out of her sadness even though that´s the crulest thing he could do to her and himself, but he would be willing to do so in order to let her tears disaapear. A true hero´s acting, huh?
But now, with all said, isn´t it more that he´s afraid? He´s just afraid losing her, afraid to not be Shinichi again, afraid to not be at her side as the one she loves, as the one who´s able to put a true smile out of her heart on her face. We see that when he tried to comfort Ran when she asked him "Do you think people will change? What if Shinichi change into another person, into someone i can´t relate to. What if he forgets about me?". The only he was able as "Conan Edogawa" was to give her his speech which was supposed to let her worrys disappear, the only thing left to him afte that was to see a "fake" smile with tears in her eyes. Again, he was the reason for it. He thought so himself "Wait for me, Ran. Just a bit, just a bit more and i will be Shinichi again!", but we all knew that it will be a long time until he turned for a short time again into Shinichi. He believes as Shinichi, as "
the"
one and only Shinichi Kudo
Ran knows, she will achieve happiness. But he isn´t like that anymore, maybe he never was.
His fear is also a good explanation for his revelation out of air to Eisuke after his confession that he loves Ran. If Shinichi would be the hero we all and everyone in DC sees in him, he would have let him do so. Either he would have counted on Rans love and loyality to him or he would have thought that´s good for her, someone who loves her and can comfort her in a way he can´t (as Conan Edogawa, but also still in a way as Shinichi Kudo). He didn´t, he told Eisuke who he is and told, no demanded him to keep his hands away from her. He didn´t do that cause he loves Ran so much or cause it sickens him to see her with another man (both play a role in it of cource, but i see it in this contest, not as his "true" motivation), he did that out of
fear. He was afraid of Eisuke, afraid of the clumpsy, girly, unfortune Eisuke. His past actions that he doesn´t want Ran to be alone with Eisuke (or Araide for another example) or asked her all the questions considering her and Eisuke or his face when Eisuke admitted his love do prove his worry, his fear of losing her (not only jealousy).
With this moment between Ai and Conan at the very beginning of their relationship i just got this all connected, so still this are just my theories, they aren´t facts. It´s just that we get it quite often, that Conan/Shinichi did something or said something which seemed to go against everything everyone believes and thinks about/of him.
We, the readers and the inhabitians of the DC-universe sees him as a "hero", not as someone who has fears, sadness, grieve and a lot of other feelings he doesn´t want others to see or know. We as the readers only get short little moments of that, they always disappear cause then we see him smirk and smile like always or cause we believe he did somehing to forget thoses "weak" moments. Is it that why we never see his quiver in fear, never cry, always with a smile? We think that he´s overconfident of himself and run into situations before thinking or do things which are meant to keep others safe but put him in harms way. But what if he isn´t overconfidently (or not anymore), what if all this he´s doing to keep others safe is cause he don´t do trust them with all his heart.
If it is so, just as a theorie of cource, then doesn´t he himself think that letting others see him afraid, sad or in despair will means admitting his weakness? If he really don´t trust the ones who are sure that they are his trustful allies, then isn´t he really lonely?
Cause all we have seen so far is him saving others or trying to keep them safe. He´s the hero, the others are the ones who needs protection. He´s the hero, he protects them, but what if they want to protect the hero? He see it like that or i assume so.
When other do save him (not helping or givign a hand) like the DBs in the cage, like Ai, Heiji and Ran several times how does he feels about it? Is he grateful or do he thinks he´s useless? How often have we see him saying thanks to Ran, to Ai, to Heiji, to the DBs after saving his ass. We don´t even need a full hand for that.
It´s his role to protect others, this is what he believes. That´s why he was shocked for example to see Ai at the location where he had caught Vermouth red-handed. He didn´t calculated Jodie-sensei, she was hurt in the action and we see when they first meet, he tries to close the door to keep her out of his "plan". When he saw Ai, his plan, no his "act" crumbled into nothing. He thought he had made sure all are safe. Heiji is on the ship, Ai at home and agasa in the car. All three far away from any danger. And Ran, heh, well she shouldn´t even know about it at all, so she´s safe, that was he thought.
We saw his surprise, his rushed thoughts, his shocked words, his eyes wided in disbeliefe and him the hero forgetting about the whole situation. This wasn´t planed and so Vermouth was able to shot him with his own stun gun. We saw again a side of him which shouldn´t be there if he´s like that, everyone is believing in.
His mask has almost crumbeld as much as Ai´s did. He let see the side who doesn´t know what to do when things are going way out of his hands, when he knows he can´t make sure anymore that he can save everyone, that he´s at mercy of fate and not of his geniuse and actions.
He was afraid again.
A hero is often afraid, we see that in a lot of mangas. Usually we see the hero overcome his fear(s) and becoming stronger in order to keep in check that everybody he cares (and not cares) for are safe and sound.
Conan on the other hand, don´t overcome his fears... he
prevents them. He puts a safe zone around the others, around his fears and does anything also with considering of getting hurt, to make sure nothing can reach that zone. Yet it happend, more then once also.
He´s afraid of others getting hurt, so he keep them out of the danger zone when he can; meaning he don´t trust them enough to let them know he´s too afraid to let them be hurt in order to help him, to stand at his side and be his strength, not as a source of protection, but as a help on the same height like him. It´s always (or that´s what he wants at least) him in danger, not the others, they help him, but they can´t protect him like they want to. Remember the one time when Ran run towards the apartment tower to save the tied-up guy? He didn´t want her to go their even though it would be faster to save the man.
He was afriad.
Again, we see that when he called the police and the ambulance and we see at the end that he´s embaressed to have acted so. He may "don´t rememebr what he said", but that was out "of worry", he screamed at them, blabbing too fast with no point to it. Not an action we are accustomed of Shinichi/Conan. Seeing only that we would say "Hah, that´s so cute he was so worried about his love, he acted like he usually doesn´t.", but seeing him how he talked to her at the phne how he tried to falsify her arguments... didn´t he just thought she´s not trusty-worthy enough to handle the situation herself good enough to make sure she´s safe while helping?
Ran saying no to his fears was the same as Ai running into Vermouth. Both did something Shinichi didn´t wanted to happend, what he thought he could prevent of happening. And when it happend, he acted like he don´t act usually.
He´s afraid of losing Ran, so he stays at her side making sure there aren´t any mens who tries to honk up with her, that´s why as Conan he´s always saying "Please wait, please.", that´s why he calls her not only to let her know he´s alive and safe, but also that she doesn´t forget about him. That´s why he didn´t acted like he told Ai (i wonder what she would say/think if she knew of it), he´s actin selfish out of fear. (i guess so...again, i don´t have eaten the truth.

)
And another fear is to let other sees his "weak" side.
All in all, i´m saying that he´s a better actor then Ai (seeing it like that, not only is Ai a lot like Conan, but also Conan is alot liek Ai XP), he plays his role as "the hero who can do anything" mostly perfectly. There are only few moments where we see his "weak" side (weak, cause he thinks so himself, otherwise he would tell someone about them) and they are really far from each other. When we see his moments of exposing his fear, his unsureness, his "weak" side, we see them at that moment as something else, we mistake them as strength or only as worry. Seeing them all together, with his sentences, with the espression he had/has, we see a line, a thread which leads us to a side of Shinichi/Conan neither we nor the others charater (yet?) knows of.
There´s only one truth!
And it is, that Shinichi/Conan is no hero, just a genius who´s too afraid to ask for "real" help (not helping hm from afar, but as his side. He don´t want it cause he´s afraid, even though he could get it so many times.), to speak up about his "true" (not talking about his "love", though it have to come out sometimes XD. I mean his "weak" ones.) feelings... he is, at least and that´s what i´m thinking, not the hero he wants to be for everyone and he don´t want that someone knows about it.
I don´t say that what i blabbered here is right, you can take it or shake it. XD
I´m sure we will see such a moment in the future of DC again, maybe we will even see him cry. Maybe we will never, but then he was a
coward, running away from himself and the others who loves and cares for him. Not a
hero worth of admiring.
Wow, thoses new special cookies are good!

I wrote three hours on this one and i had no idea when i started it.

Sorry for the seven-foot-text-wall. It was meant to be only a few thoughts of a moment i liked from Ai and Conan, seems it got out of hand a bit.

I blame the cookies!
