Also, is it true that the Japanese are considerably less socially prudish about things like nudity and language and so on? I've heard this but I dond't know if it's true, thought if it is it explains a lot about these kinds of vending machines.c-square wrote:I think the idea is that, by the time the machine turns on at night, kids shouldn't be walking around outdoors. Despite censoring their porn, yes they're less prudish about that kind of stuff. Do I need to load up some pictures I took of random love hotels, porn theatres, and t-shirts being sold at random open kiosks outside of temples with profane language and... "positioned" stick figures?mangaluva wrote: Also, is it true that the Japanese are considerably less socially prudish about things like nudity and language and so on? An eye for an eye does isn't limited to crime and justice. It's a principle that in it's basic form means equal retribution must be given or taken by the offended individual/party, which is why it is applied to many other key issues such as racism and equality. But to better explain what I meant, if we interpret "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" to its extreme(like I did previously), it would result in "my home. my ways. conform". Under the principle of "an eye for an eye" the offended party, in this case culture, would seek equal retribution by seeking all foreigners to conform in their country just as they were forced* to conform in "Rome(just using this an an example)" during their stay. This leaves everyone "blind" because it removes the ability of cultural exchange thus limiting their understanding of things outside of their environment.mangaluva wrote: (BTW, what on earth does "an eye for an eye" have to do with "when in Rome, do as the Romans do?" O_o I know the wording's similar, but one is to do with crime and justice and the other to do with culture and customs.)
Can you give me an example of what you mean?mangaluva wrote: My overall opinion is that what is "civilized" changes from culture to culture, and I think it's only polite to try to observe another culture's customs while you're in their country; however, if a foreigner is unaware of a custom, you shouldn't hold it against them. Well anyway, after I get Manga's reply, I'm stepping out of this thread*hears applause and cheers*.......could of waited until I was gone but anyway, I really don't think more can be said on this issue without involving repetition of previous points. Now back to my job to cause chaos around DCTP while protecting it from the chaos.....I had a part in spreading. It's the job of a partly insane vigilante.*jumps off roof*

I already gave examples. The spit/snort/hanky thing; driving; also etiquette such as whether or not you remove shoes when entering house, which has been discussed elsewhere on the forum. There are things in diet, like cultures which have dogs or guinea pigs in the traditional diet, which other cultures consider disgusting. I can't give you more because i'm not aware of more, but I am aware that there are more that I'm simply ignorant of. I've only travelled to the US, Italy and France, which all developed as largely similar cultures, so I'm not as aware of cultures that have developed entirely seperately.TheBlind wrote:An eye for an eye does isn't limited to crime and justice. Re: DC and culture
Hmm... The answer is rather complicated. Yes, the Japanese are absolutely less socially prudish about nudity than, say, Americans or the British. One just has to watch an episode of Cutey Honey (an anime aimed at girls aged 5-9 where the main character briefly becomes fully nude at least once per episode) to see the difference. If that same cartoon were to be released in North America or England, there would be a huge uproar.mangaluva wrote: Also, is it true that the Japanese are considerably less socially prudish about things like nudity and language and so on?
Some of this lack of prudishness, I'm guessing, comes from the fact that communal bathing at hot springs is a common experience to the Japanese. Japanese people are used to seeing other people naked in a non-sexual setting, so nudity is really no big deal to them. Compare this to most 'western' countries, where if one adult is naked in the presence of another, nine times out of ten it will be in a sexual context. Thus nudity comes to be automatically associated with sex.
As for language, the short answer is the same, but the long answer is quite different. No, the Japanese aren't as prudish when it comes to swearing. The reason for this is because, in Japanese, there are no such things as swear words. Japanese is a language where one shows disrespect, not by swearing, but by using informal or base language with someone. Specific words like sh*t or fu*k don't exist in Japanese. Instead, people will refer to others using a very base version of the word 'you', or start talking using a direct and low-brow style of language. It's a very different way of thinking, and so it makes sense that Japanese people don't understand why putting English swear words on a shirt would be weird. After all, to the Japanese, they're just words like any others.

but are they separate, men's side and ladies's side, are not they? or they exchange shifts? as I recall from DC.c-square wrote:

Re: DC and culture
Most have separate sides, one for the men and one for the women. Sometimes, if there's just one bath, they'll take turns, first the ladies going, then the gents afterward, or vice versa. There also exist some that are mixed gender, and anyone can go in, though these are definitely in the minority.kholoudsafir wrote:but are they separate, men's side and ladies's side, are not they? or they exchange shifts? as I recall from DC.c-square wrote:

Re: DC and culture
I already responded to the driving and spiting/snorting. Again, no one looks at being almost ruined over with positive feeling(unless suicidal), so why would anyone consider it a civilized action. I think you are confusing customs and behavior with civilized actions. The spiting/snorting actually causes more infections than using a napkin(unless you do not do it properly). This is why you are instructed to cover your mouth when coughing or to sneeze into something to prevent the virus from getting airborne(wash your hands afterward and dispose of the napkin properly, A message from Dr.Blind).mangaluva wrote: I already gave examples. I don't see how a diet could be considered uncivilized(unless you are eating things that are not meant for consumption..which would probably kill you in the long run). Eating cats and dogs might be disgusting to someone but that doesn't make it uncivilized, what rules says that a chicken is okay to eat but no a cat? Heaven forbid, not a cat. Many advance civilizations before the common era had diets we would faint upon looking at.

I kinda get what you are trying to say but I can't think of an example myself, which is why I asked you.

*pulls abs. to the side* Okay, I need an individual like yourself in my plans. Go to these islands here, I own them, you are now the official dictator of that land. You're job is to cause chaos on a global scale while I secretly unleash my plan for victory...you will most likely die and go down in history as an evil monster, while I'll look like the savior of the world but I'm sure an individual like yourself doesn't mind such trivial details. I only have enough money send one of your lolis with you though, so choose wisely and don't let them touch my jar full of candy..that's MINE!

Re: DC and culture
I watched a programme before and it is about using selective breeding on or genetically modifying animals in order to get the best possible products out of them. Some were just seriously weird, cows with extremely huge bulky muscles and featherless chickens (which looked seriously horrible) and all these are what goes onto our plate - in almost every developed country.TheBlind wrote:I don't see how a diet could be considered uncivilized(unless you are eating things that are not meant for consumption..which would probably kill you in the long run). Is this civilised? i mean a featherless chicken will never be able to survive in the outside environment on its own and it was us humans who made them like that, i know that we have to consume other animals, but aren't we just toying with them now just to suit our needs?
all im saying is the word 'civilised' is the wrong word for this context, the moment you eat or kill an animal - you are not 'civilised', you're a savage that takes animal's lives
P.S im a meat eater myself btw - im just saying 'civilised' is the wrong word to use.
Catch it. Bin it. Kill itThis is why you are instructed to cover your mouth when coughing or to sneeze into something to prevent the virus from getting airborne(wash your hands afterward and dispose of the napkin properly, A message from Dr.Blind).
