I feel since then, Conan having to knock someone out and pretend to be them has been outdated, because in canon, everyone just goes along with Conan for the most part anyway. I point this out because that's kinda what they're doing here, but I just know it won't last.

Considering how Kogoro woke up early in the Red Shirt case (that aired 9 years ago wtf), it also feels like Conan also wants to avoid needing to use Sleeping Kogoro as the sleep darts are maybe not working on Kogoro like they used to. And as far as I remember, Gosho's more or less stuck to not using Sleeping Kogoro ever since.
So I guess AOs using Sleeping Kogoro makes sense to at least stand out from newer manga based episodes, but it also comes across as missing one of the more interesting and subtle changes in the series. Probably because SLEEPING KOGORO IS PART OF OUR BRAND SO USE HIM FOREVER BECAUSE POPULAR!!!
