I am not sure if Xcomm want to play a Ruy Lopez game or just study it. Either way, here it is.
Ruy Lopez
White Black
1) e2-e4 e7-e5
2) Ng1-f3 Nb1-c6
3) Bf1-b5
These move are the Ruy Lopez.
These Moves are the variations g6, Ng-e7, Nd4, d6, f5, Nf6, Bc5, and a6. So which Move do we study first?

I don't know where to start. Maybe studying the Bc5 or Nf6?

You might have misunderstood. The Ruy Lopez is these moves. What is shown is where the opening becomes a Ruy Lopez. What I want to know is which of Blacks moved listed do you want to look at first, or do we just look at them in order?
In other words ...
These Moves are the variations g6, Ng-e7, Nd4, d6, f5, Nf6, Bc5, and a6. So which Move of the moves just listed do we study first?

g6 - The Smyslov Defence, Fianchetto Defence, or Barnes Defence
Black prepares to Fianchetto the King side Bishop. This will allow black to get a bishop on the long diagonal, and try to prevent white moving a pawn to d4. This tries to make the dark squares strong for black while making the light squares week for white.

Me? ??? I've never studied specific openings. I find there are way too many to keep in my head. And, besides, I like playing my games my way, instead of using pre-set moves from someone else's games. I definitely respect those who do study the moves, as it's a lot of work! For me, however, it takes the spontaneity out of the game.
If I were playing, I think I'd probably respond a7-a6.
