WELCOME TO THE RETURN OF ESPIONAGE!

After a hiatus, it seems it's time for another round of Espionage! This round will be familiar but will come with one major rule change: Campaign Voting. Instead of voting who you want to be arrested in the game, you will be putting your support behind those you wish to stay in. Each player will have 5 votes to allocate to allies, which you will acquire through discourse in the topic and ensure you receive enough votes to not be arrested yourself.

The rules are below and have been simplified for newcomers and veterans alike to easily digest, but if you need a refresher: There are three types of roles—the Detectives, the Spies, and the Civilians. There will be two Detectives who will work with the Civilians to catch the two Spies. These two Spies are independent and are not privy to one another's identities.

If the Spies manage to kill both Detectives, they will have two phases to escape. At this point, the voting method will change to Lynch Voting: everyone will have one vote to cast for the first phase, and whoever receives the most votes will then be arrested. For the second phase, if only one Spy remains, the voting procedure is the same as the first phase. However, if both Spies are still in the game, all remaining players will have two votes to cast. The two players that receive the most votes will then be arrested at the end of that phase.

Sign up now and help make this the best game of Espionage to date!

NUMBER ONE RULE, PLEASE READ:
As usual, there are to be NO PRIVATE MESSAGES REGARDING THE GAME AMONGST PLAYERS WHILE IT IS STILL IN PLAY. Any questions and any actions you wish to submit toward the game go through the GM (Game Master) and no one else. All communication about the game, including any strategizing, is to take place IN THIS TOPIC ONLY and by absolutely no other medium (including instant messaging, chatrooms, these forums, anywhere).

CAMPAIGN VOTING RULES

— Voting will be carried out much differently than previous iterations of Mafia or Espionage. In this Campaign Round, players will all begin with FIVE VOTES to allocate to other living/non-arrested players as they wish. For example, you may give Player A +3 votes, Player B +1 vote, and Player C +1 vote. All votes are to be sent to the GM before the end of a phase. Ultimately, the player with the lowest total of votes will be arrested each phase. If there is a tie, no player will be arrested that phase.

— You may NOT award yourself any votes. You may, however, discuss exchanging votes in the topic and make allies, promising to vote for one another (bearing in mind that no one is obligated to follow through on said agreements). All votes will be revealed at the end of each phase.

— If you do not vote, you will incur a penalty of minus however many uncast votes you have applied to your total for that phase. Thus, if you receive +3 votes from other players yet did not allocate any of your 5 votes, your total for that phase would be -2.

— Should the Detectives die, the Spies will begin their escape. At this point, the game will revert to Lynch Voting for the remainder of the game. Each player will then have one vote to cast for the first of these remaining phases, and the person who receives the most votes will be the one who is arrested at the end of that phase. The second and last of these phases before the remaining Spies escape can take one of two forms: If only one Spy remains, the phase will take place as it did the previous phase; if there are two Spies remaining, however, all players get TWO votes to cast. The two players that have the most votes at the end of the phase will then be arrested. Of course, Civilians at this time should be voting for any remaining Spy suspects while the Spy bides their time for their escape.

GENERAL RULES

— The number of Spies and Detectives will always be equal. No Informants are included; players who are not given roles as Spies or Detectives will be Civilians. These Civilians receive a list of 9 player names at the beginning of the game that may be shared in public posts at any time; each list is unique and randomly generated but will always include the name of at least one Detective (whether it includes a Spy is incidental and random). In general, unless the game is massive, there will be two Spies and two Detectives.

— For the Civilians and Detectives to win, all Spies must be arrested. For the Spies to win, both Detectives must be dead or arrested and two phases without being arrested must then pass.

— The Spies are not born allies and are not privy to each other's identities. They can both win the game through the usual conditions, but if a Spy is arrested, they will not be considered having won the game even if another Spy in the game escapes and wins.

— Both Spies may kill each phase. If they both target the same Civilian or Detective, they will both be given a successful result by the GM. However: Spies cannot kill each other, by accident or on purpose. If a Spy targets another Spy, the GM will return that their kill action failed. Whether a Spy then frames their fellow Spy and has them arrested, or indirectly works with them to kill the remaining Detectives is then up to them. A Spy also is not forced to kill and may elect not to do so.

— Each Detective will have the ability Investigate to use each phase. This allows a Detective to send THREE PLAYER NAMES to the GM. The GM will then randomly select one non-Spy player from amongst them and send the Detective a result saying "_______ is NOT a Spy". This non-Spy player can then NOT be included on any future uses of their Investigate. Detectives may include likely arrest targets in their lists but whether someone is arrested during a phase in which they are included as an Investigate target has no bearing on the result they receive; in other words, even a player arrested in a given phase may come back as being not the Spy. A Detective is free to share their Investigate results in the topic if they wish, but of course should be mindful that doing so will signal their identity to any Spies in the game. Naturally, no deceased or previously arrested players may be included in an Investigate list.

GAME RULES

— All communication is to take place IN THIS TOPIC ONLY. You are NOT allowed to discuss the game anywhere else in any form. This includes chatrooms, other topics on the forums, private messages on the forums, instant messages on Skype or any other service, in person, or any other method. Whether you are alive or dead, refrain from discussing the round outside of the topic until the game is completely over. The only exception to this rule is sending in your actions/votes to the GM via private message.

— You may change your vote or action for a given phase as submitted to the GM at any point prior to the end of the phase.

— All votes that are cast are counted for a given phase. Additionally, voting actions go through before kill actions are processed. If the Spy's kill targets someone who is arrested that phase, the Spy's kill will simply "fail". If the Spy is arrested, any kill actions they sent in for that phase will be nullified and not take place.

— If you do not vote during Lynch Voting, you will have all uncast votes (be it one or two) counted against you instead (plus one or plus two votes to your total for that phase). Additionally, if you send in votes in Campaign form (five votes spread out over several players) when Lynch Voting is in effect, your vote will be considered null and the penalty will be assessed normally.

Once you have died, do not post in the topic any longer. After all... you're dead! You can resume posting in the topic once the game is over as everyone reflects on the results.

— You are NOT allowed to reproduce any communication with the GM in any form for other players. This includes quoting or alluding to your role assignment, using screenshots or pastes of results for a given phase, or any attempt to skirt the boundaries of the game. If in doubt, PM the GM and ask them directly.

— You are NOT allowed to discuss the round outside of this topic with other players anytime from when it begins to when it ends. This includes once you have been eliminated in the game (be it by dying or being voted for arrest). At this point, you will only be a spectator to watch the remainder of the game.

PLEASE NOTE: Certain rules may change prior to the start of the game. Please review this post when it begins to ensure you are up to date.

That's 8 players signed up so far:

If we can get up to 16 or possibly 18, we'd be in good shape. Onward!

I'll take spot 16.

This nicely solves the problems we previously discussed with the campaign voting idea :). How many people would we need for two spies, though? 18?
