The Professor left the police station deep in thought with a hand on his chin. Earlier that day, when he had started his investigation, a police officer noticed his..special attentiveness toward the bigger jewel displays.

Apparently, the building had been broken into the previous night and the only information gathered on the culprits was that they were foreigners, and they had all seemed interested in what was in the cases.

After explaining that he was an archaeologist and was looking for a certain stone (minus the mention of any percieved immortality it might give), the officer complained that between the foreign group and a phantom thief, most of the larger gems were likely going to be rare in Japan. The mention of a lone thief caught Layton's interest, and he asked if it were possible to see any of the information about him, thus leading him to the MPD.

A thief that, lately, has only been taking gems, and then returning them. He wasn't sure if it was connected with what he was asked to find, but the possibility would have to be considered.

"Oi, Layton!"

The Professor looked up to see Inspector Grosky running towards him at full speed. Constable Barton seemed to be attempting to follow him, though he was quite far behind.

"Inspector, it's nice to see you. Is something wrong?"

"You could say that. Mr. Ledore was found unconscious at one of the museums last night. He'll be okay, but we still need to find out who is responsible, and we were hoping you might be able help."

Henry?! I wonder if this have to do with those... unsavoury characters mentioned in the letter...

"Of course I will. What do you want me to do?"
-----------
"I'm sorry Luke, but I find that you're a bit suspicious right now."

"What? I would never do anything to Henry!"

"I personally think it was that Inspector. He's certainly enthusiastic for someone who only just learned about the attack."

"Oh, he's always like that. He doesn't know the meaning of the word 'calm'."

Everyone had been gathered by the river. The Professor had wondered about the location at first, but soon realised the reason when Loosha popped her head out of the water and moved to lay down next to Arianna, who smiled and reached up to pat her.

He wasn't sure if voting someone to leave Japan would solve anything, but supposed it was better than doing nothing.

"Erm, I think it may have been Angela," said Barton, "She knows Henry quite well, after all."

"Aww, but she's so nice, man." Sammy jerked a finger at Clive. "I think he's, like, much worse."

Bronev motioned to Oswald.

"I think this man has been a bit too silent. He has a bit of a record as well, doesn't he?"

Janice moved to stand in front of the composer. "He missed his child. From what I've heard about you, I'm sure you can understand the feeling." Bronev just turned away and said nothing.

"Well, I don't know about you lot, but I think it's about time we actually made a decision."

The figure in the black cloak and mask stepped forward and looked around.

"So, anyone else have any opinions?"

The remaining people spoke up.

"It's Barton!"

"No, it's obviously the Masked Gentleman!"

"It could have been Aryan!"

Layton could only watch and tally the votes. He didn't want to participate in this, but...

Once all that wanted to speak were done, he checked the list over once more.

"It seems... that there has been a tie," the Professor knew he probably shouldn't be relieved, but he allowed himself to be anyway, "No one is returning to London today."

A true gentleman leaves no puzzle unsolved!
~o~
What limits are you referring to? I am just doing my job.
~o~
We do not just back away because something could be dangerous.
~o~
Will I be not putting more danger to the people around me if I don't do anything? And that's no reason one should hide behind a mask.
~o~
I am not forgetting that someone did ask for my help in a letter, so I am not really stealing anyone else's job.

Descole sat outide of a cafe, cape laid carefully over the chair staring absently at the cup of tea in his hand. A few people gave him odd looks, but most ignored him. All sorts of strange people came out at night, after all.

So far, all that he had gathered from...various sources was that the immortality gem was commonly called Pandora and that it wasn't something to mess with. A large organisation was already looking for it, and they didn't like having competition.

I can only hope they won't notice us quite yet...

He noticed a group coming around a corner across the street and almost spilt his tea.

What is he still doing up?

Coming toward him was the top hatted Professor, the apprentice boy, the girl from the museum, the person with the odd white mask in black, and a young lady talking with the man in the purple coat who had found Henry the previous night.

He didn't even have time to hide himself before Luke pointed in his direction.

"Hey! What are you doing here?"

Before Descole could say anything, Layton gently pushed the boy's arm down.

"Luke, that's not how you greet someone." He looked around, making no cars were coming before crossing the street, the others following with confused looks on their faces. When he came to stand in front of Descole, he smiled.

"It's been a while, Descole."

The scientist smirked and set down his cup, standing to see the gentleman in the eye.

"Indeed it has, Layton. I hope you don't mind that I followed you. I noticed you had gotten into something interesting again, and couldn't help but be intrigued."

Flora frowed and tilted her head. "Professor... Did you know he was here?"

"No, but it doesn't surprise me," he adjusted his hat and folded his arms, "We do seem to find each other quite often when it comes to situations like this. However, I didn't expect to be able to find you just sitting around like this."

"Didn't look to me like 'e was just layin' about, though." He Black Raven said. "That was the look o' someone 'o is thinking 'ard about somthin'..."

Descole's eyes narrowed behind his mask and he frowned at the other. He didn't know who this person was, but they were a bit to observant for his liking.

"Yes... Well, actually, Layton, I'd like to speak with you." He looked back at the Professor while reaching behind him to grab his cape.

"It would be best if you gave up this search."

Everyone looked surprised at the sudden statement.

"Umm..."

Katia's soft voice drew his attention as she stepped a bit closer.

"May I ask why? I don't really know who you are, but if the Professor didn't know you would be here, that means you aren't here because you were asked to look for the gem like the rest of us. Why should we stop looking because you said we should?"

"I understand if you don't want to trust me, but know this. Great danger surrounds that stone, and anyone who tries to find it." He glanced over at Layton. "I'm sure he's heard some things in that regard as well, if I'm correct in what he's been researching."

Now all eyes were on the Professor.

"I do believe what Descole says is true. Truth be told, it would be best if I could get everyone to stop searching. But, I have a feeling they won't, so I, too, will continue."

Katia turned to Anton with a worried look on her face.

"If this is true... maybe you should go back."

The man frowned. "I'm not exactly afraid of danger, Katia. You know I can handle myself."

"You may have been able to, but you're... not in the best condition right now. I would really feel better if you would please go back."

Anton(Tome) stared at the girl defiantly and was about to respond before he noticed the resolution in her eyes, along with the worry.

"...Very well. If it will make you happy..."
---------------
Summary: Anton(Tome) was killed.

Since when do you not listen to reason?!

A true gentleman should know his limits.
~o~
Job? More like a fool's errand. You and I both know perfectly well the danger it carries.
~o~
Oh? So you'd be willing to put the people around you in danger? Because unlike myself and that thief, you don't have a mask to hide behind. And they will exploit that.
~o~
It's not as though they'll be allowed to find the gem just because you stop looking. He already said he'd take care of it. If you want to be such a gentleman, then you wouldn't want steal someone else's job.
~o~
Ah, yes, that mysterious 'concerned' person who put everyone else at risk in the first place. I'm sure their request completely justifies continuing.
