People that come active again will feel being punished for being active again.
If becoming active again is hurting them, they could just stay inactive. At least that's what they'll think :p
And I thought you wanted to teach the thief to "stop stealing". Not to teach him to continue stealing ;p

Also, you punish him by not letting him join the next round. The shopkeeper wouldn't use a punishment for the thief that would harm himself too.

That's what the "will vote for themselves" idea is about too. Not to punish inactive ones (at not directly, since you can lynch inactives ones easier)

Id did penalize, or would have, in case holmes wouldn't have been aptxed anyway.
Or do you want to say that every inactive-but-got-active-again player would get aptxed immediately the day he want's to vote again? You yourself don't like to make decisions based on 1 occurrence :p

if you want to word it that way, then sure, it punishes people for becoming active again. But really, it doesn't. :P
People who become active again will feel punished, yes. Because they were inactive.
People who never become active again are then punished by being arrested and never being able to do anything again.

Again, I refer to my point that just because punishment is carried out when it's possible doesn't mean that the act that made it possible to punish the person is the reason they're being punished.

And yeah, lethargy was supposed to help stop ties, by getting inactive people to vote more. Really, the reason for it was to attempt to get inactives to get up and do something for a change. They still ended up sitting on their butts though :V

How does it harm the shopkeeper? If by "harming the shopkeeper" you mean "not letting people participate in the next game", I can guarantee you that shopkeepers ban people from their stores if they try to shoplift.

Voting for themselves: My point though is that this doesn't help stop ties at all, except maybe on Day 1. After Day 1, there's almost always someone who's going to have 2+ votes for them, and at that point, it doesn't matter how many people have 1 vote for themselves, because that will never impact the vote and thus doesn't actually do anything to break ties either.

And what does holmes being APTXed have to do with it? All I said was that if someone wants to vote again, they must hand in a vote which they will then be thrown out (as if frightened), then after that day they'll be back to being a normal player again, unless they decide, yet again, to not vote and be inactive. I never said anything about APTXing people who wanted to vote again after being inactive.

But it's better to punish them and make them realize that it hurts the entire town and not just themselves when they're inactive. The person chose not to be active for several phases for whatever reason, so they got arrested for it. And then, yes, they get a punishment for it in the form of arrest. Better to punish them than to let them get away with being inactive. And in most cases, the inactive person doesn't actually get active again so "being punished for getting active again" doesn't really apply.

Arresting the inactives helps the town not waste several nights trying to prove someone who is just inactive. :| Those people shouldn't even be playing in the first place if they don't care enough to send in actions for X amount of phases.

Ah! Good point, that's one reason to definitely not use the voting-for-themselves system. Too easy to find the travelers.

Anyone who just goes inactive without saying anything gets killed in RL by Abs. (unless they got hospitalized, died, or tornadoed etc.)

I'd say just stick with the arresting + ban from future games. It's more or less the fairer punishment out of all that suggested.

(and less scary as well)

I agree, we don't want people to be too intimidated from joining because we're too strict on some things. It's bad enough that a lot of people see the rules and roles and go "no way am I getting through all that D:" and not join.

@ako: you said somewhere that the example holmes for "getting active again" doesn't count because he was aptxed anyway. (thus his vote would have been removed anyway)
But he did get active again.

That's also still the harm for active players I talked about. Because they loose votes they theoretically should have when lethargy isn't in effect.

I never said anything against arresting inactives or baning them from games :p


@traveler: That's easy to solve. You simply let him vote for himself too. As a traveler abroad you can't change your vote then.
Your own vote would also count towards you. So you could get lynched. But since you're abroad, you won't die. But people could see/guess that you're a traveler that way.
A reason for travelers to go to japan someday and not to camp outside :p

Seems like it would accomplish the same thing just by not having non-voters vote for themselves, so I don't really see the point in changing it.

So, the current problems on "our" agenda are:

- inactives
- Tequilla (No usefulness in early game)
- Sonoko (Too strong - lose ability to find out friends killer, replacing it with either: Keeping ability after friends death - OR getting suspect list instead)
- Yusaku (Deduction + Interrogate)
- Detention (Just does too much for a town ability)
