Toichi. Kid bias, I know, but when one son is still emotionally connected to and remembering his father's advice, while the other is practically groaning whenever his troll of a dad shows up, gotta go with the closer family. Both have their faults, and much as I love him, you'll never hear me say Toichi is perfect.
Yuusaku was perfectly willing to let his son go off and do things on his own, which would normally be a good thing, but when murder investigations are involved... Being taken to crime scenes while young just doesn't seem like good parenting or preparation. He's just too laid back, even if one could argue he might know what would be too much for Shinichi to handle and wouldn't let him get involved if things actually seemed dangerous. But also not really being concerned about his wife thinking he might be cheating, and taking her almost being killed by a fanatic so lightly. I'm sorry, saying that he was prepared is still jerky. He's even more overconfident than either Kid, which is probably how he ended up being the thief's rival in the first place, but if doesn't come off well in most situations of being a troll. ...And with all that criticism, I do have to give him that his laid back approach allows his son to be stronger and more independent, and he has helped many people in consulting and solving cases for the police. Whether the hands off approach is always the best or not... I don't know. He respects his son's wishes, but not really his safety...
Toichi's biggest hit is honestly in being a criminal, from what we see. And treating a lot of things like shows, like with his knife throwing with the kids... yeah, biit creepy there, Toichi. And while he also took his son to his line of work (day wise), it was a safer one and Kaito was genuinely proud and happy to be there and experience it. He took a lot of his father's advice to heart, and continues to hold Kaito's respect to this day. He even has Yukiko's respect, as one of her knights. He taught Kaito how to be a gentleman, even if Kaito rarely shows that learning normally, and while he can be arrogant, no one even in canon can really hate him. Chikage still agreed to marry him after the scare he gave her, and Yuusaku knows who he is and doesn't say anything. His motivations for being a thief in the first place were explained and pretty great. Again, just being a thief to begin with isn't the best. Because breaking the law and stuff. And it could be argued that how connected he was to Kaito knowing how dangerous his night job had gotten later wasn't the best and very likely affected Kaito's mentality afterward. (It's fanon, but you'll be hard pressed to find someone who writes Kaito a lot and doesn't touch on how attention seeking, lonely, and just overall not completely stable mentally he is. Stable enough normally, but he can and will get violent, and if that face he made when Corbeau showed what he looked like doesn't say enough... jeez.) But I do have to bring up that he never said Kaito should be Kid. Kaito might not have become Kid if he hadn't learned his father had been murdered. He didn't become a thief because his father encouraged it; he was taught to be a gentleman, to be kind, and magic. Again, it was because of his job and the dangers with it that brought all the trouble, not the man himself, from what I can see.
...So yeah. Team Magic! \o/
