nomemory pimping out the Onionhead fanclub was one thing because it was a certain thread in Off-Topic that could get lost in the shuffle otherwise.
But advertising an entire discussion board that everyone sees when they log in is another. You'd figure new people would probably visit the General and Story Discussion boards first, if anything. After all, no one registers an account (and waits forever for that registration to be approved) on a specific fan community solely to participate in off-topic, random threads. That's silly. They could go anywhere else for that.
Most new members likely would have already jumped in on the Story Discussion if they had anything to add. For example, recently Khellendos had stated that he joined the forum specifically to post his theory in Story Discussion. And he did so.
Summary: I'm not sure how effective the advertising is. You can keep doing it, of course, but Abs. just does not see the point!
