Kaito, a puzzle-loving high school freshman, is selected as a candidate for "Phi Brain". He and his friend Nonoha find an "unsolvable puzzle" near their school. The puzzle turns out to be a life-threatening "philosopher's puzzle" created by the mysterious group P.O.G. (Puzzle Of God). After successfully solving the puzzle, Kaito is designated as a Solver and is joined by other Solvers as they battle P.O.G. all over the world by solving the "philosopher's puzzles".

I started watching this anime since a few weeks ago. It's a little weird, but it's great nonetheless. You could call it a mystery thriller like DC though the main character is never really called a detective...
I also have to say
Spoiler:
THE AMOUNT OF HO YAY IN THIS ANIME IS HIGH!
You can find episodes on Gogoanime.com

it would be doing all other mystery thrillers a disservice to call Phi Brain a mystery thriller

as much as I love the show, it's not exactly the least predictable :P

edit: and oh my god the plot for this season is literally "when we were kids you told me you'd play with me but you didn't and it made me sad and it made my mom sad and then she died so now I want to take over the world"

that's amazing, but I don't know if it's so amazingly bad that it's good or just amazingly bad xd

Then let's say it's Professor Layton when he was a teenager. Though like Akonyl said, the plot is kinda stupid :|

Aside from them both having puzzles in them, Layton + Phi Brain are vastly different series in their tones and execution, I feel like it'd be more accurate to say "it's an attempt to appeal to the types of fans who liked Yu-Gi-Oh but with puzzles instead of card games".

also, all the puzzles in Layton and pretty much all of the storyline mysteries are deducible, but in Phi Brain there's been at least one explicitly unsolvable puzzle (the POG password sliding puzzle), which they just hide by cutting away from the characters doing the impossible middle steps, and a lot of the other presumably possible puzzles are mostly glossed over.

I'd say Detective Conan is actually closer to Layton than Phi Brain is, because Detective Conan gives you a chance to solve the puzzles yourself, while Phi Brain for the most part doesn't, and just uses the puzzles as a means to advance the plot.

Akonyl has spent a lot of time to say "this show is a guilty pleasure".

I'm pretty sure I've said that in the past :P

Really? I could have sworn you said literally everything else.

Of course, the guy who ranted about Air every episode isn't complaining about this, I think that goes without saying. Although Air is not a guilty pleasure, it's a terrible anime that suddenly gets good halfway through.

right, i said "in the past", not "in that post" :P

though I don't think I've ever used the words "guilty pleasure", I'm pretty sure that I've mentioned that I think it's an objectively bad show but enjoy it nonetheless in previous posts, though I'm not gonna go diggin em up.

edit to avoid doubleposting: Alright, I'll cut them a little more slack on the plot now that it's been revealed that the villains are blowing everything out of proportion due to being driven insane. Although "I'm a villain because I turned insane" isn't the best of plots either, it's better.
