VIZ Media Licensed Series Dropped on Manga Stream

Post by leokiko »

Quoting them:

"Dear MangaStream supporter,

It's with a heavy heart that I make the following announcement. MangaStream will no longer be releasing the following series:

- Naruto
- Bleach
- One Piece
- Hunter x Hunter
- Katekyo Hitman Reborn
- Claymore
- D.Gray-man

VIZ Media has demanded that we end our scanlation work for all of the above. This comes despite our best efforts to pursuade fans into supporting official distributors by being the only group to actively prevent an archive from forming on their website through the removal of chapters that are older than a couple weeks. They've succeeded in little more than invoking inconvenience to the community as their digital magazine missed the mark; it runs several issues behind and only features 3 of the above series. So long as their product continues to be slow, awkward and inferior to something a ragtag group of nobodies can churn out in a few hours - fans will continue to look to scanlation groups and aggregators for their weekly fix.

The aggressive and escalating nature of their threats have forced our hand into removing the content. MangaStream will no longer be posting full scanlations for any of the aforementioned series, we will instead focus our efforts onto the series we do that are not licensed by VIZ Media (you can assume everything currently on our directory will be continued).

Our final message to our loyal JUMP audience will be this:
Thank you for supporting us over the past two years and making Mangastream your home away from home. It was a pleasure sharing our time with fans who were just as passionate and dedicated as we were.

Although MangaStream will no longer be hosting any of the Jump series, if it's something our fanbase is interested in, we're considering leveraging our connections to bring you accurate spoiler summaries for the Jump chapters as early as possible. We know this isn't much, but hope it can whet your appetite until the dozens of aggregators release the official Jump chapters on Wednesday."

You DO know most WSJ fan translators are VERY SHITTY right? MS was the one with the highest speed and quality overall. These sites ALWAYS got MS scanlations as a priority.

And, Naruto? fu** Naruto, I will only get mad if I don't get to read One Piece and Hunter x Hunter.

I'm more worried if I can't read Detective Conan anymore. :C

Viz Media is also the one who licensed Detective Conan, right?

DCTP take down the volumes that are released by them. But I wouldn't say they are out of danger.

considering how they decided to change things like the names while translating the DC manga, i sincerly hope viz doesn't try to take down DCTP.

Wow, such knowledge. Allow me to ACTUALLY explain.

It was the best and fastest scanlator for the big 3: One Piece, Naruto and Bleach. They dropped THAT and these:

- Hunter x Hunter
- Katekyo Hitman Reborn
- Claymore
- D.Gray-man

Well, I'm sure a bunch of people will pop up to scanlate it, so I hope they reach the quality and speed MS had.

Even as a person living outside the USA and Canada (meaning I wouldn't have access to SJ Alpha if I wanted to), I understand where Viz is coming from. It seems many people have forgotten what it means to wait (in this case, it's 2 weeks) and have been overly spoiled leading them to believe that they are entitled to what they have been getting. I will never be supportive of that kind of internet whiner who will always find a crappy excuse not to pay regardless.

For those who are outside the USA and Canada, and don't have access to the SJ Alpha, the complaints are a bit more understandable, even though they're still worthless in the eyes of the law.

*gets bricked*

On a side note, DC is in a different situation : Viz is almost 40 volumes behind, and there's no such thing as a Shônen Sunday Alpha. Theoretically, I suppose they could go after DCTP, but I doubt they will for the reasons I just mentioned.

That's the main reason I get mad. They provide EXTREMELY LIMITED product and only release 3 weeks after it's released in Japan(I'm sure they could release it at the same time or just a few days late). I live in Brazil and I buy manga, but I can't get acess to SJ Alpha.

And besides, what was the purpose of shutting MS down? They KNOW other people will appear and scanlate it, so why bother screwing us up? The only thing they got is BAD REP outta this. Just look at MS and Viz facebook page. That's 450,000+ likes against 17,000, respectively.

First, it's 2 weeks, not 3. People say 3 because most of them don't know that the files usually come out almost a week before they're officially released in Japan. Honestly, I think 2 weeks is already quite good (even if it can get better), but that might be because I was already buying mangas before this scanlation business at a time when we were years behind Japan.
I agree that the fact that Alpha is limited geographically would create a situation which would seem unfair for those outside the USA and Canada (although you can always use a proxy), but Viz' bought the rights for the english release of these titles and it is perfectly understandable that they would like the exclusivity to release something they have paid for.

The purpose ? Encourage people to switch to legal ways (in this case, Alpha). Maybe they're planning on going after those other people too, that would only be logical after all.
If only 1 fan = 1 sale...Oh wait, the manga industry in the US is collapsing and the best selling volume (Naruto n°50) sold 37 000 units in 2011. I'm sure Viz are devasted by the fact that all these non-buyers refuse to like their facebook profile. :P
