Plothole in Death Note?

Spoiler alertz.

Only those who own a Death Note have their lifespans removed from the sight of those with a Shinigami's eyes. Why, then, could Mikami not see Light's lifespan after he relinquished his Death Note? As I recall, he kept his memories because he was always touching a piece of the note, but it wouldn't transfer control back to him.

The same method was used for the episode "Father", where Chief Yagami's Shinigami eyes are even able to give him peace of mind when he dies.

Did I miss something? It's quite possible--it's 4:40 AM and I'm very tired.

I thought he owned the death note Ryuk bringed to him, and Light owned the notebook that originally belonged to Misa.

No, he gave the one back to the third Shinigami and gave the other to Mikami.

He kept his memories back while Higuchi was the owner then Higuchi died on the chase leaving the Death Note without an owner... I can't remember the details when Mikami was supposedly chosen by Kira to make judgments for him and I'm not sure if Mikami or Light was the owner of the Notebook.. On the Season Finale, it was clear that Light's life span cannot be seen by Mikami...

At this point in time, the ownership was clearly not on Light...

Is the Shinigami you were talking about the one who loved to eat chocolate?

I can't remember the whole thing caused I've watched the series years ago but I did watch the rewrite version recently but it was very compressed...

Which I find odd, because it seems that he wasn't the owner of the notebook at that point.

Indeed.

Yep.
