What characteristic in particular?
If it's about the main character being the badass one, I can't think of any ATM...
If it's about the cliffhangers, you might wanna try Monster... But it's more serious than DN..

On in intellectual basis, Ghost in the Shell SAC series is the best. Full of action, gorgeous art, the best OST i know of, awesome characters, and it will make you think. Its by far my favorite series of all time.
