I cannot believe nobody has made a topic on this awesome series yet! I suppose I'll have to be the one to start it. There are eight original arcs, either referred to question or answer arcs.
The basic storyline, as stated by Wiki is:
Wikipedia wrote:Higurashi no Naku Koro ni takes place during June 1983, at a fictional rural village called Hinamizawa (雛見沢) (based on the village of Shirakawa, Gifu, a World Heritage Site),which has a population of approximately 2,000. The main character, Keiichi Maebara, moves to Hinamizawa and befriends his new classmates Rena Ryuugu, Mion Sonozaki, Rika Furude, and Satoko Hojo. Keiichi joins their after-school club activities, which consist mostly of card and board games (and punishment games for the loser, usually him.) Hinamizawa appears to be a normal, peaceful, rural village to Keiichi. However, the tranquility abruptly ends after the annual Watanagashi Festival, a celebration to commemorate and give thanks to the local god, Oyashiro. Keiichi learns that every year for the past four years, one person has been murdered and another has gone missing on the day of the Watanagashi Festival. Keiichi himself soon becomes drawn into the strange events surrounding the Watanagashi Festival and Oyashiro. In each story arc, he or one of his friends become paranoid, and a crime is committed. Usually, the crime involves the murder of one of their own friends. While it seems impossible to tell their delusions apart from the mystery of Hinamizawa, slowly the truth is revealed.
I've watched the anime of both the original and Kai, but does anyone know where you can find Rei subbed? I can only seem to find it RAW online. If anyone can find it just tell me. So, what is
your favorite arc?
Mine would be Onikakushi-hen, Watanagashi-hen and Minagoroshi-hen. 8D;;

"Do you know Oyashiro-sama?
Yes Hinamizawa!
I kill you you kill me...."
....that song is in my head AGAIN. It's all your fault Shinran. It doesn't help that it's Megure's voice...
Ahem..anyways.
I haven't looked for Rei yet, I was planning to wait until it's done before watching it (too many animes). But I'll be on a lookout for it.
As for arcs, I love the first one (Onikakushi-hen) because it's the most memorable. Watanagashi-hen and Tatarigoroshi-hen are my second favorites x]. Have you read the manga arcs? I really love those ones. The most memorable arc for that one would probably be "Onisarashi-hen" which doesn't feature any of the original characters- but that's what makes it good~

xDDDDD
Megure-keibu's seiyuu singing that song cracks me up so bad. The manga arcs are really good, but they don't have the whole manga series. I'm waiting for the next chapter.

Watanagashi-hen and Meakashi-hen are my favorites

.
random thought: Onikakushi and Meakashi-hen really gives out the "killing spree vibe".

Alright, reviving this topic for an awesome reason.
I watched Rei, and nobody can deny the fact that the "Dice Killing" arc is awesome. I cannot wait for OVA 4 to come out~~

YAY! Go Higurashi!!
I was actually the one who brought it into my school, and now it's so popular that we have this thing called "Higurashi Thursday" where we go around stalking each other and making our footsteps hecka loud and repeat "Gomennasai, gomennasai" over and over again every single Thursday! (And since I'm the one in my school who knows like, 5 billion murder tricks, poisons, alibi tricks, etc, everyone refers to me as "The Assassin"... The teachers got freaked out the first time they heard that XD)

REVIVE~~~~~~~~~~~~~!
I started watching the series about 3 weeks ago, finished the original series in a day, Kai in about a week, and Rei just the other day. 0w0
Also, I just watched the first live action movie last night. Yeah, I really ought to stop watching horror movies at 4am.... It was a lot better than I'd heard it was. They basically took the first arc and changed it around a bit (they added Hanyuu at the end!!! =DDDD).

After hearing many people suggested this series around the forum, I decided to give this series a try, and I was pleasantly surprised and glad. I'm only at episode 3 right now of the first season but the plot development and the characters are absolutely amazing. The suspense is gripping and I am sitting at the edge of my chair as the story progresses on. It's a fantastic series and I cannot wait to see more of it.

YAY!!! Yeah, Higurashi's awesome. My 4rd favorite anime (1. Detective Conan, 2. Romeo X Juliet, 3. Baccano!). I remember I was sick when I watched it and got to stay home from school, so I finished the first season in a day. =w=

Wow! That's fast!! I am on the last arc of 1st season. I cannot wait to get to the answer arcs. I do have a question though. Am I supposed to treat each arc as distinctly different? I notice that there's a parallel time frame between Onikakushi and Watanagashi arcs but there's some facts that definitely don't match up. The Tatarigoroshi arc is a completely different story obviously.
