As far as I can remember, Light showed a trace of conscience/dilemma only when his sister was kidnapped. He didn't really go like, "Oh no! I became bad because the object was bad! What do I do now?". And that makes him one hell of a lead.
Fangirl slip: For an anime character, he looked hot in that scene wherein Takada Kiyomi sat across him in the hotel room when they reunited. :D

I'm not putting it among my favorites but it sure deserves all of its popularity.
That's saying something coming from me, one of those unreasonable people  ::) who usually deviate from popular stuff. LOL
The finale's last few scenes were epic.
Actually Death Note is one of the few I'd actually remember... up until L died anyway... then it becomes ... unbearable for me :P (I don't love L but when another agent came, my mind went "Argh the Alphabet soup!" and I stopped watching XDDD... no offense XD)

Sure. All of us are immature and you're the only one who's.. mature. Bravo my friend! =D

KaitoKid0 wrote: Naruto is better and more popular because its more interesting and it is more attracted to alot more age groups.
Naruto is worse though more popular because its less interesting and it is more attracted to alot more babies, noobs and basically people who don't like to.. err.. think.

There, I fixed your sentence because it had many semantic mistakes.
And no, I didn't correct the grammatical mistakes because I didn't wanna stay up all night. :)

KaitoKid0 wrote: obviously naruto is better since they cut out DC english version along time ago and still is running naruto.
I won't say anything. I'd just suggest you look up for the definition of "better" in a dictionary.

KaitoKid0 wrote: Because it appeals to more people
What people? Oh, you mean "THE noobs" again?

KaitoKid0 wrote: saying naruto cant compare to DC is very immature, just because you like it better or not like naruto at all doesnt mean your opinion matters...FACT is Naruto is better. and i am sure if we had a survey about which people like more (obviously not here) Naruto would win.
I might be wrong but if you're talking about my previous post, I didn't say that we can't compare Naruto to DC.. I just said that comparing DC to Naruto is like comparing Gold to shit; meaning that you can still compare the two of them, though the difference is obvious, ya know. ;) And let me just tell you that liking or disliking something is never a FACT, it's called an OPINION. Here's an example:
- Opinion: DC is better than Naruto.
- Fact: DC is more intelligent than Naruto.

KaitoKid0 wrote: i am sure if we had a survey about which people like more (obviously not here) Naruto would win.
Of course, since most of the people in this forum actually have brains. And vice versa. :)

KaitoKid0 wrote: I am not trying to diss DC but i just feel the need to mention this.
You can never diss a great show, so don't worry. ;)

In all honesty, some people might prefer Naruto to a series like Detective Conan because of the fact that it is action-based.  A friend of mine watches different series, but Detective Conan doesn't appeal to him because he, in general, doesn't care for murder mysteries, where as I don't mind them.  I watch stuff like Law & Order and NCIS and used to watch CSI and junk like that, so it's no surprise why I would like Detective Conan.  Even the latest J-drama I'm watching is cop-oriented.  I also used to read mystery stories and novels and enjoyed them, like the Sherlock Holmes stories, so you can see why it would appeal to me.  My friends tends to like comedy (as do I) and action (mostly Shounen, imo) and also a big fan of the Gundam franchise.

I will say this, though.  I do feel that Naruto would appeal to a larger audience compared to Detective Conan, and that's probably due to the fact that it comes across as if there are more people who prefer action series compared to a detective or mystery one.

I wouldn't say people don't like mystery actually.  Lots of people over here like the deduction in DeathNote and to them it's like the deepest, coolest, anime, everrrrr1!1!1!one!

But everyone knows the fangirls just read it for the yaoi, the prettyful drawings, and the sexism : D.

Speaking of prettyful drawings I think an area that turn away from Conan is the image.

well to be fair, Death Note is more of a suspsense anime than a mystery anime. I mean, as the viewer you know everything pretty much, you're just watching the characters (who don't) run around frantically.

also, although I liked DN a lot (well, up to episode 26), a lot of it was basically just a series of one-upping
Kira: "I did something, L"
L: "Hm actually yes I expected that of you. I set up precautions against that you see."
Kira: "Ha, you're too late! I knew you would set up precautions and made my own plan to deal with them."
L: "Oh really hm well I figured as much that you would find out my plan that I set up for your plan, so actually there are more precautions I made against your plan for my plan for your plan."
Kira: "!!!"

and it got sort of silly.

Deathnote isn't really a mystery.  We know who's behind everything at the beginning.  As it was mentioned, it's more so a suspense, thriller as opposed to a mystery/detective series.

Gotta love generalizing.  I read it because it had an interesting story.  I watched it to compare it to the anime.

The point, though, is that mystery series tend to appeal to a certain audience and it's mostly towards those who like that genre in general.  Maybe for US viewers and readers, the mystery genre isn't as appealing as say something that's constant action.  What I'm saying is that maybe that group is larger than those who prefer a mystery series.

the irony of course is that shonen anime is almost never constant action. At the VERY least, half of every episode is some combination of pointless dialogue, explanations for EVERYTHING, fanservice, random 10 seconds where they show the sky for no reason, the reminder of what happened in the last episode, the preview for the next episode etc.

Joking xD.  I quite enjoyed DeathNote really (I loveeeeee this stuff).  Though you do have to admit the fangasm explosion all over the internet about this series usually have nothing to do with the actually freakin storyline.  Death Note is a relatively old series, I find that it takes a really weird place in US anime o_o;.

Anyways.  I guess I shouldn't say "detective manga" but say "story that is based around thinking and outsmarting opponents with insights in the process of deductions".  Series like "Liar game", "Kaiji", "Shion No Ou" (to an extent) and "Detective School Q".

To prove my point with the drawings I chose 3 series with really different styles.  I have yet got my American friends to watch Kaiji because the drawing style is "too weird" xD.  It's super popular in Japan though, I know lots of mangakas that read/watch stuff by Nobuyuki Fukumoto...yet nobody really knows about it in America I feel ;(.

Death Note is popular because the people working at Hot Topic wouldn't leave normal people alone until they read it
