I just got SoulSilver and I'm trying to work out my team. When I used to play Crystal I'd get a poliwag because you could get one early, but I want something different...other than totodile, does anyone have suggestions for a good water type?

I love staryu to death, but it doesn't learn too many good moves, and element stones are hard to get.

well, i couldn't find any good water types either, i'm using suicune as my water/ice type, but since you just got the game, that won't be an option for you until you beat the elite four, i'd recommend staryu, teach it recover, surf, psychic, and thunderbolt (and elemental stones are easy as hell to get)

I caught a Tentacool trying out the Old Rod. I was so surprised I didn't get a Magikarp that I caught it right away but I don't recommend it. You can always catch Red Gyarados

Lapras is a good water/ice type.  You can get it in the Safari Zone once you get the customization unlocked.  Rocky beach is the area.  Hard to catch, but completely worth it.

So Lapras isn't anymore in the Union Cave every Friday?

i did, it's alright, i'm waiting for the flying and surfing pikachus myself, and i think gyarados fails as a water type, water types are weak enough to electricity without the flying type making it worse

SO true. I HATE THAT! Gyarados shouldn't be flying. It's crazy to think that  It should be Water-Dragon, or Water only.

Gyarados is already one of the top10 Pokemon, he doesn't need the added brokeness of Dragon typing.  But yeah, he's pretty fail as a Water type unless you have Waterfall or Aquatail.

So making it learn Fire Blast or Thunderblot ain't a good idea...

Gyarados would work fine, but I usually get one of those in Pearl and I'm looking for something I haven't tried before.

I actually decided to try a Krabby. So far it's not a bad little thing (it knows Mud Shot and its Stomp's really good). Plus I like watching it walk sideways behind me.

Have you seen Graveler follow you around?  Probably about the funniest thing I've seen so far.  (Though, Magikarp flopping around behind you is pretty funny, too.)
