This episode rushed through the novel. I was hoping for an two-parter for this arc. Still good though, if a bit confusing for anime-only viewers.
I'm agreeing with Ako here. I'm an anime-only viewer and wasn't confused at all.

HAHA, I know, sorry, I was just joking around. He pulled a Lelouch there, like ranger said.
Then what's confusing about it? Three out of three anime only viewers here got that perfectly.
It's fairly easy to understand based on the character's expression at that time. It's still probably not a good idea to make enemies in a death game. o_O;
I just feel like it's a bit quick to pull a Lelouche really. Earlier in the episode, the guy got angry at beta testers, and the axe guy managed to calm the guy down, and this time when the guy got angry and roused the other people he coulda just tried to calm them down again with something like "well, it was different from the beta so I didn't know until it pulled out its new weapon", rather than just trying the "make everybody hate me" gamble.
It worked for Lelouche because he had massive amounts of power to back it up with, but this guy's claim to fame is that he got less than 1/10th the way up the tower in the beta of a game that has already shown itself to be different than the beta. Just doesn't seem very smart
To be fair, before no one had directly died in front of them. What he should've said was "Yeah, I was in beta. Guess what. So was that guy. Hell of a lot of good it did him. I'm just better than you, quit trying to find excuses."
Many people through the internet didn't get Kirito's actions AND the reason why the dude that died refused the potion. Many also don't get how they can live on SAO without eating in the real world, etc. The discussion you are having right now shouldn't exist, because that guy NEVER DIED on the novels.
This is all bad exposition, REALLY BAD. They crammed a really great arc of the novel on only episode, and if they do the same again for the next arc (which is pivotal for Kirito) I will probably drop this.
On top of that, bad production values, with a lot of still shots on the fights.
I don't really know why the dude chose to die. I mean sure he was being selfish for wanting the boss item drop, but still. With the way it went down I can't feel much sympathy for him. I mean Kirito tried to save him twice first by yelling out a warning and second with the potion bottle. (Was any of the other players even paying attention to this? o_O; ) Perhaps it was a death chosen out of guilt... I really don't know... He might have just given up all hope once he realized that getting out of this world was going to be a hell of a lot more difficult than he anticipated.
The guy refused the potion probably because he couldn't face the others if he survived - he was supposed to their leader, and had a secret agenda for his own benefit. He felt like what he did wasn't justified, and whatever ounce of honor he had made him refuse the potion. Plus anime plot reasons, duh.
Apparently the novels touch upon the rest of the players being put into hospitals, therefore taking care of the nutrition/bathroom/etc. The company that made SAO isn't evil, just that one creator, so I'm assuming the rest of the company is doing all they can to help, unfortunately, due to anime plotz, only the creator seems to know how the game code works so no one can do shit to stop this.

It sounds like you're looking for reasons to drop it, so you might as well just do it. I found nothing wrong in it that you don't find in every other anime.
Not really. This episode was universally criticized by almost every novel reader, and I don't enjoy watching a bad adaptation ruin it. I would have criticized much more stuff that happened if I wanted to nitipick at every detail. I will give more than 1 episode, since it seems they want to do every sidestory on 1 episode, then maybe they will go into a decent pace when they get back to volume 01.
The animation was bad too, it was kinda obvious, wasn't it? I won't drop it only because of that though. If they do a good job with the characters/story, the animation is the least of my concerns.
it might have not been a high-budget masterpiece, but I wouldn't really call the animation "bad" by any stretch of the imagination.
and pretty much any read material that gets translated to video is going to lose something in the process, it's just part of the nature of the transition

At least this fall has Robotic;Notes; Jojo and (hopefully)Little Busters!
I'll be watching both of those, along with the new KyoAni show and some unanounced Gen Urobuchi anime :O
However, I dunno if Robotics;Notes is going to live up to Steins;Gate levels of expecations - apparently the VN flopped hard in Japan
I posted on the Steins;Gate thread about R;N. But R;N's VN didn't do bad on Japan at all. It sold nicely on both PS3 and XBOX. I agree that it won't be as good as S;G though :p. This new Kyo-ani show should be fun, the main characters are like Okabe and Kurokeno xD
You should keep an eye out for Jojo's Bizarre Adventure too. Don't believe they will do a good job with it though, but if they do, it's gonna be epic.

yeah everyone bought it because of all the hype with the anime release + steins;gate success, but the reviews for it are quite abysmal
