Lunge from Monster

Not quite... He wanted to put the blame to Dr. Tenma and failed to consider other suspects for a majority part of the series... It was only towards the end of the series that he become awesome... However, he was a great addition to the series...

As for my pick for the best Detective character, it has to be the one and only, Detective Zenigata of Lupin III...

just because he wasn't correct doesn't mean he wasn't awesome as a character, though.

Like I said, he became awesome in my eyes after he made amends for his shortcomings... I think his character was designed to be hated during the early part of the story...

The most awesome part about him is probably his signature "Typing" move...

I haven't read any of the others, so I'm going with... Kudo Yuusaku.

If anime counts, I think Professor Hershel Layton deserves to join the rankings. Not that he's a detective by trade, but still.

whats with the bashing of Lunge?  I freakin loved him - he had that oddball trait with the whole typing/computer memory thing that was just awesome.  Sure he's not a perfect character, but that's what makes him great.  If you want a clean cut flawless dull character you can choose Kudo Shinichi, who's one weakness is the fact that he can't sing well, oh no.  Lunge's flaws are awesome.  He's definitely not the smartest, but probably one of the greatest characters.

Yeah,  I completely agree with that, if we choose an intelligent character , we have to choose Shinichi ( I think that Shinichi demostrate more intelligence than "L" ) and if we have to choose a Great detective character ( Be a great detective character does not mean that it has to be the most intelligent ) It will be Inspector Lunge.
Lunge is the perfect representation of a Detective, Because detectives don´t allways resolve all of the cases in the real life, and the evolution of the character is awesome.
