Maybe slow at times but it's like Lost... As the series progresses you will learn a lot about the past of the major characters... The side stories may turn you off a little bit but the awesomeness of the series would be appreciated probably midpoint of the series...

You trying to earn some brownie points mentioning LOST to me? Well, from what I've seen, they can't really compare.  Anime vs Live action.  Secondly, LOST's character development cannot be rivaled by annnnytthiiing.  They have so many characters that have fully developed histories and the connections the writers developed between them is unparalleled by any other show.

well, nothing really happens in that series. you can skip about 50 episodes(it really only has 70 episoes) and you will still be able to guess what happened before + predict the final episode.
if you want to watch some episodes about philosophy, you should go to http://www.veoh.com and search for some documentaries.  :)
thanks, i shall do that

All I can say is this... " You'll thank me later!" much later I think....
As for the character development, as the series goes on characters really do evolve... Those seemingly random episodes aren't really random at all...

I just read a review of the first DVD release, and it sounds really good. I think I'll add it to my to-watch list.

yeah you should, it starts slow in the first few episodes, however it's just setting the plot.  I find Monster's filler episodes, if you can call them fillers, extremely well done.  The show just has this aura of intelligence, it's pretty awesome.  The characters are well done also.

I haven't watched as much as I want to (im on like episode 21), but it definitely feels like a mix of a mature adventure story and throw in some mystery/realism/adult themes.

YESSSS 6 MONTHS LATER I HAVE FINISHED THE SERIES!!!
Spoiler:
The last 5 episodes were awesome - I love the "experiment" where Johann wants to commit the perfect suicide, killing himself and just completely OWNING that town..

I kind of want to try that..I love how all the townspeople slowly suspected each other, and throw in some guns its anarchy - just goes to show how society is hyped up w/o government and rules.

Inspector Lunge is awesome, my favorite character of the whole series, loved his battle in the end against Roberto, BKA agents own!
Awesome series, its sick how everything, minor or not, comes back up as an important event.  Also, I have to give credit to the character development - I loved Tenma's mini-adventures he would have as he would travel through the country side of ze Fatherland and the Czech Republic.  That was probably my favorite part - how each character was so fully developed.

The only beef with the series - the anime is waaaay tooo freaking long for its own good - i felt like the animators dragged this shit on more than it had to be.  The plot progresses even slower than DC when it comes to the plot episodes.
And because it's so long, you forget a lot with all these complicated German names - I found myself going "wait who's that again?" and looking at wikipedia.

If you're going to start watching, you want to watch it continuously without any breaks, because I did that I forgot shit.  The manga is probably a lot better with this issue.
