I saw Steins;Gate as something special by episode 3. The characters interactions are better than 90% of most animes I watch, and that only by episode 3.

ok I think I figured out my problem with the series. It's basically trying to be the awesome quirky team of anime stereotypes like Haruhi did except not nearly as naturally. And it's hammered in to my head constantly what their personalities are (I don't have to be reminded that she's being tsundere by every line she says thank you) but it can't hope to live up to Haruhi's level of genius so it comes across as really forced (except the protagonist who is awesome). And it's a shame considering the obvious high quality of pretty much everything else and that the characters are pretty fun at times but it just seems to go way too far, and considering the anime I enjoy that's saying something.

I'll admit that's all nitpicking at the end of the day as I am really enjoying it and continue to be interested in where it's going. Because it seems like the plot could become this epic plot twist rollercoaster ride of awesome rivaling stuff like 20th Century Boys and the like. I'm only complaining because this should already be guaranteed to be one of my top 20 or maybe even 10 anime series I've seen and it isn't so far.

Okabe is a much more entertaining main character than Haruhi and Kurisu too in my opinion. Are you on episode 5? It's around episode 12 that sh*t starts to truly happen. I don't know if that will change your opinion, but it's always better to judge an anime after watching it all.

you can't really just say that once a show does something successfully (Haruhi and its cast), everyone's copying off of it though, I never really got the impression that they were trying to "do what Haruhi did" at all. Not everything has to be judged by everything that came before it

and yeah i realize Haruhi isn't the first anime ever to do everything, relax...you dorks. Sorry for not knowing every anime ever and trying to use logical comparisons. 

It's just weird that the mostly good characters can sometimes became PAINFULLY annoying and needlessly repeditive. It's not too often but it's just odd to see something so annoying in the middle of literally everything else being great. It would be like if they put toilet humor in Inception. Or it would be like if some great long running murder mystery was creepily obsessed with making horrible pairing stories for minor characters-wait

Sure Steins;Gate has some stereotypical characters, but, whatevs man.  What's wrong with some red-head genius tsundere who browses 2chan? Okabe is a given fan favorite, probably one of the greatest male protagonists in anime history - Daru is the audience - we love anime, video games, and talk about waifus.  Mayuri is a deconstruction of the typical bimbo-esque airheads by making her like 100 x autistic that it's painful, I don't necessarily like that character archetype, but I can find the humor in how dumb she is.  Moeka is your typical kuudere/Rei clone.  You got a cat girl to appease silver1412 types of people, genki energy girl in the Part-Time Warrior, and a trap for the sick bastards.

You can't really compare the Haruhi chars with the Steins;gate chars, they are like on a whole 'notha worldline (hahahahah shutup), but what I'm trying to get at it...so what that the characters are rather 'shallow' or generic archetypes - news flash, every tsundere and kuudere in the history of anime is essentially a clone of Rei and Asuka from Evangelion.

I think it's meant to feel forced, which is part of the whole vibe of a dorky funny group of college misfits.

Watched the first 5 episodes dubbed at the Otakon premiere.  It was really good.  They kept the Japanese name ordering so "Okarin" still made sense, they dropped a Doctor Who reference in episode 2, and somehow were able to use the term "eBay" instead of just "auction site".

I'd say it isn't like it will ever be popular enough outside of the internets to be sued by them for that, but Japan tends to not give a flying firetruck about American copyright law anyway so that is odd.

Edit: I should emphasize how much I'm invested in the story before reaching double digit number of episodes is incredibly impressive. That's probably another reason for where my Haruhi comparison came in, along with 20th Century Boys, which are the only two other anime/manga I've seen that have had a story I've been really invested in in such a short amunt of time.

Edit: Ok, I take it back. The characters are all enjoyable...except Daru, who is a complete asshole. Not a satirical joke of a character (or one written as such), not an interesting jerk, not a quirky nerd character, just an asshole. It would be fine if he only appeared for an episode or something but as a main character, no. He is such a constantly perverted, unfunny dick, that even other pervert anime characters would hate this guy.
