Why is Bleach popular? (maybe most shonen in general?)

Post by kkslider5552000 »

I don't want to be one of those "IT'S POPULAR THEREFORE I HATE IT" weirdos but why is Bleach popular?

I mean, can anyone honestly tell me that Bleach is amazing? I actually like Bleach (not as much as most shonen though) but...I can't find a reason outside of people just like it I guess? Maybe it's the absurdly long arcs? I can't think of a reason outside of internet support (and we know how well that worked out for Lucky Star  ::) )

I mean, I do enjoy the plot at times and some of the humor at the beginning is GOLD. But that's about it that can be easily explained on why Bleach is so popular. (although there was that plot twist around volume 20 that I still think it is awesome.) Whenever you're supposed to feel sad for a character, it usually fails, for example.

And I'm starting to feel that this is true with most shonen where they are truly much more entertaining than they should be.

I'm sure some witty asshole will come her and just say "Good question!" at some point btw. I'll probably laugh...or would if I wasn't expecting it.

It was interesting until the end of the Soul Society arc since you weren't sure what plot twists were going to happen.  It actually had unknown elements and surprises to keep you guessing.  Oh, and back then it wasn't so dragged out as it is now.

what

it-it wasn't dragged out? The Soul Society arc felt like it was going on FOREVER. Remember that battle that took pretty much an entire volume (Ichigo vs. GUY WHOSE NAME I FORGET)? The story that lead to the huge plot twist was great though. Enies Lobbies in the One Piece anime didn't feel that dragged out though. Another problem I had is that I don't think it used the new characters correctly, with too many characters that I didn't care about. If I remember correctly, it was really confusing at times because of that.

The current arc in the Viz manga has been mostly fun. Orihime being kidnapped has been much more interesting. And I like the designs and personalities of most of the new characters introduced since the arc started.

I just saw the part where Ichigo wakes up in episode 17 of the anime. Like I said, COMEDY GOLD. In fact, has Tite Kubo made a comedy manga? Cause that could be pretty great.

Well, not sure how the manga felt during Soul Society, since I'm basing it off the anime (sans filler).  It finished that up by episode 63, which is pretty amazing compared to now.  And the manga now... if it took more than 2 minutes to read I wouldn't bother.

yeah I'm basing it off the manga. And I'm not exactly sure why, but I remember being unable to figure out who was who and where everyone was and why everyone was doing what they were doing for the entire arc.

I thought for a while I just stopped caring about shonen anymore but I got Hunter X Hunter volume 24 and Rurouni Kenshin 19 and 20 recently and enjoyed them a lot.

The only thing I can say is that once it starts good, and sucks at the middle part, as long as you're always on track, it's hard to let go...

I'd say Bleach is one of the shonen series that sucks at some parts but gets surprisingly good at climaxes and certain points. It not an "always great" series, but the fact that you're expecting something good even just once in a while makes it quite good.

Well, what can I say? It has the coolness factor sometimes. And for the one-on-one complaints, they're actually having two/three-on-one battles in the current arc. For the "eventually wins in the end" thing... I hope one Shinigami actually dies in the current arc ^^

Most people I bet watch for the action and kick ass looking fights, 99.9999% why DBZ was so popular.

I have given up on most Shonen Animes in general and just read the manga unless there comes a fight I really wanted to see and just keep up with the anime via blogs like http://randomc.animeblogger.net/ probably because I am lazy with little hard drive space and really cant stand filler or dragged out fights anymore. I have been watching to many Comedy series lately lawl like Haruhi, K-ON, To-Love-Ru. Negima though needs an action anime adaptation >< (the manga is both action and comedy the fights are really nice, story is good, and is absurdly funny at times. it needs an anime to do it justice damnit)

Focused straight on the ecchi side of the story not the Fighting or lately the Final Fantasy Tactics style setting.

*spoilers in links if ya are reading the manga dont really need a tag though.*

stuff like that compared to http://randomc.animeblogger.net/2007/02/07/negima-19/

nor do they portray the seriousness of what negi has been going though (mental and physical), every bad guy is since the anime stopped has been really unique and not the just the standard homicidal maniac type.

Going on the anime I agree with GinRei, I thought it was good up through the Soul Society Arc.  Since then the anime has gone downhill from there.  I just don't get the sense of epicness I did in Soul Society, as well as the fact everything just seems more drawn out than it used to be.  Plus as been pointed out it is just to easy to be able to tell exactly what is going to happen before it even happens.
