that's because the anime is apparently awful

I don't mean the anime. I mean the manga. The manga is so sad once it reaches a certain chapter. D: And it gets super confusing too.

Also, I haven't watched it(cause it seems too depressing, though I do read the doujins and love the opening song) but Neon Genesis Evangelion. I heard that the creator, Hideaki Anno, based the characters off of his own depression.

No. The drugs he used while thinking of Evangelion's philosphical (::)  ::))plot were why he was depressed.

Although it was starting to become as awesome as I had hoped it would be during the acid rain Tokyo arc and the arc afterwards, recent volumes I've read are ruining that (volume 20 (21?) felt like they were trying to see how sad that they can make a character's past without getting me to care in any way, shape or form)

Yeah, the Celec arc was tragic in more than one way.

The OVAs, though? Skip that part entirely. Like, they acknowledge that it happened with a quick flashback, but it's never really explained, and then they just move on. I'm happy about that, since like you said that part was so much fail emotional manipulation, and it went on for WAY too long. On the other hand, I thought the voice actors, the time constraints of an OVA, and the soundtrack might make it flow better and feel more sincere. Guess we'll never know.

Of course, the fail in Tsubasa didn't end with Celes, so we'll see how the OVAs handle that.

Definitely Elfen Lied belongs to this category... simply tragic from start 'til the final episode

Better if you read the manga than the anime. It's manga is more detailed and has more interesting ending than that of it's anime version.

No happy ending for Kouta and Lucy(nyu)

It's funny how the thread title is "Top 5 most tragic Anime episode/series" but everyone just says one episode.

Well... Is it weird to say the Chibitalia arc in Hetalia? Because I thought that was pretty sad.... but cute.
