In 2015, we had the first B'z lyric video in the form of "Love Bomb". While that was for an English song, it seemed only appropriate we someday try one for a Japanese song but in a manner suitable for international viewers. Today, we are making available an HD version of "This Love". This is a Japanese-English cover of the original Maroon 5 song. The B'z version was released exclusively as a bonus to those that purchased the full, deluxe digital set The Complete B'z on the Japanese iTunes. Notably, this version is no longer available for purchase on the service and has never been performed live. As such, we thought this would be the best avenue for at last giving it the subtitle treatment.
Most importantly: This video would not have been possible without dumytru. We had long planned to work on a project of this sort together but only now had the opportunity presented itself. The project required an immense amount of effort to turn around in the timeframe we had and we are very pleased with the result. Stylistically, part of this video is designed as a sequel to "Love Bomb" as thanks for those that were so supportive of the original release, so if you enjoyed the original, we're hopeful you'll enjoy this one too!
As for how the cover itself came about:
"This Love" is a cover of the popular song of the same name by American rock band Maroon 5. In addition to an added guitar solo, the song blends newly-penned Japanese lyrics by Koshi with English lyrics from the original. In Be With! Volume 67, published in September 2005, it was noted that the song came about when the Apple staff suggested the idea to cover a foreign song in the band's native language as an incentive. When asked if the song was difficult to convert to Japanese, Koshi responded: "No, it was fun." The Japanese was adjusted in terms of nuances, but attempted to remain faithful to the original. As the recording progressed, Koshi joked, "Isn't this one of our songs!?" upon hearing the result and feeling it really was just like a B'z sort of song. Ultimately, the track would never be made available outside of this collection.
You can view the lyric video from Mega in 1080p (100 MB, H264-MP4).
—We have also prepared an experimental 1080p and 60 frames-per-second version that can also be viewed from Mega. This is a bonus curiosity, as though we like it, we did not design the video around this FPS.
And, one more thing!
The aforementioned predecessor to today's release was the 2015 lyric video for the song "Love Bomb" (an English version of 2005 Japanese single "Ai no Bakudan"). Earlier this year, a 4K Ultra HD version was prepared at a resolution of 3840 × 2160! This version also makes some alterations to the original video, and as such it has been re-rendered in 1080P as well for those uninterested in a 4K release.
