RPG maker is fine on it's own way but if you want to play really professional, awesome and inspirational works i recommend these:

As for japanese-RPGs, my favourites are below. You can play most of them via emulator on your PC.
Final Fantasy series (SNES, PS1, PS2, PS3)
Chrono Trigger (SNES, NDS)
Chrono Cross (PS1)
Xenogears (PS1)
Breath of Fire 3 - 4 (PS1)
Tales of Symphonia (GC) and other Tales of... series
Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean (GC)
Skies of Arcadia: The Legend (GC)

As for western PC RPGs my favourites are
Baldur's Gate 1 - 2
Fallout 1 - 2
Planescape Torment

Love RPGs though play only mostly western. But play a lot and fan for different reasons so decent sized list:

Gothic 1/2 -- (PC) Favorite RPGs to date. Die-hard RPGs still very much like old school D&D. Gothic 3 and Arcania were both pretty much trainwrecks.
Risen (PC-360 version sucks) -- Much more successor to Gothic 1/2 than 3/Arcania, just new setting.
Oblivion (PC/360/PS3)
KOTOR (PC/Xbox)
The Witcher (PC)
Mass Effect (PC/360), Mass Effect 2 (PC/360/PS3)
Dragon Age(PC/Xbox/PS3) - Harkens thematically back to Baldurs' Gate which is awesome.

Woot! Yeah, Shenmue! I rarely see people who have played this awesome game.

RPGs I've played so far (#1 first RPG I have played; #9 RPG I'm currently playing):
1) Pokemon series
2) Digimon (3 RPG games for PS1, Digimon World DS)
3) Shenmue 1 & 2
4) Final Fantasy (IV, VI, X, X-2, XIII, Crisis Core, Crystal Bearers)
5) Golden Sun
6) Kingdom Hearts
7) Chrono Trigger
8) Fable 1, 2, and 3
9) Persona 3 Portable (I'll try persona 4 in my next. I've read many positive reviews about it.)

RPGs that I would like to play if given the chance: Persona 4, Mass Effect
