What are your favorite lyrics?

Post by Emily »

Everyone loves music.
Its the universal language!
Are there any songs that really strike you as meaningful?
Or maybe even quotes?
Well heres the place to put them! :)

(If theres any similar threads, forgive me. I did a quick search and didn't find any.)

An example.

"They say I could be your father. I'm gonna let the people know, that in the 80's I was too high to make anyone as beautiful as you." -PacoVolume

We Walk Alone
In The Unknown
We Live To Win Another Victory
Our Sacred Scars
Show Who We Are
It's Time To Face It!
We Are One, We Are One, We Are One,
We Will Stand Together!
Number One, Number One,
The Chosen Ones!
We Are One, We Are One.
We Will Fight Forever!
We Are One,
And We Won't Die Young!

I dreamed I was missing
You were so scared
But no one would listen
'cause no one else cared
After my dreaming
I woke with this fear:
What am I leaving when I'm done here?

So if you're asking me, I want you to know
When my time comes
Forget the wrong that I've done
Help me leave behind some
Reasons to be missed
Don't resent me and when you're feeling empty
Keep me in your memories
Leave out all the rest
Leave out all the rest

Well for English songs I pretty much like all the lyrics by The Weakerthans.  Their lyrics are interesting to listen to multiple times (I always catch something new) and they're quite well read.  They're also quite funny to me.

Well, I’m lost
I’m afraid
Rope tying down a leaky boat
To the roof of a car on a road in the dark and it’s snowing

- Reconstruction site

I'm standing on this corner.
Can't get their attention.
Facing rush hour faces turned around.
I clutch my stack of paper, press one to a chest,
then watch it swoop and stutter to the ground.

- Pamphleteer

etc etc...
Hey, I have an idea, let's have a THIS SUCKS / NO THIS SUCKS / NO YOU / NO YOU argument for a couple pages, that will really be great. - Ingmar

Spoiler:
"A Lap Dance Is So Much Better When the Stripper is Crying"

I was lonelier than Kunta Kinte at a Merle Haggard concert
That night I strolled on into Uncle Limpy's Hump Palace lookin' for love.
It had been a while.
In fact, three hundred and sixty-five had come and went
since that midnight run haulin' hog to Shakey Town on I-10.
I had picked up this hitchhiker that was sweatin' gallons
through a pair of Daisy Duke cut-offs and one of those Fruit Of The Loom tank-tops.
Well, that night I lost myself to ruby red lips,
milky white skin and baby blue eyes.
Name was Russell.

Yes, a lap dance is so much better when the stripper is cryin'
Yes, a lap dance is so much better when the stripper is cryin'
Well I find it's quite a thrill
When she grinds me against her will
Yes a lap dance is so much better when the stripper is cryin'

Well, faster than you can say, "shallow grave",
this pretty little thing come up to me and starts kneadin' my balls
like hard-boiled eggs in a tube sock.
Said her name was Bambi and I said, "Well that's a coincidence darlin',
'cause I was just thinkin' about skinnin' you like a deer."
Well she smiled, had about as much teeth as a Jack-O-Lantern,
and I went on to tell her how I would wear her face like a mask
as I do my little kooky dance.
And then she told me to shush.
I guess she could sense my desperation.
'Course, it's hard to hide a hard-on when you're dressed like Minnie Pearl.

Yes, a lap dance is so much better when the stripper is cryin'
Yes, a lap dance is so much better when the stripper is cryin'
Well I find it's quite a thrill
When she grinds me against her will
Yes, a lap dance is so much better when the stripper is cryin'

So, Bambi's goin' on about how she can make all my fantasies come true.
So I says, "Even this one I have where Jesus Christ
is jackhammering Mickey Mouse in the doo-doo hole
with a lawn dart as Garth Brooks gives birth to something
resembling a cheddar cheese log with almonds on Santa Claus's tummy-tum?"
Well, ten beers, twenty minutes and thirty dollars later
I'm parkin' the beef bus in tuna town if you know what I mean.
Got to nail her back at her trailer.
Heh. That rhymes.
I have to admit it was even more of a turn-on
when I found out she was doin' me to buy baby formula.

Yes, a lap dance is so much better when the stripper is cryin'
Yes, a lap dance is so much better when the stripper is cryin'
Well I find it's quite a thrill
When she grinds me against her will
Yes, a lap dance is so much better when the stripper is cryin'

Day or so had passed when I popped the clutch,
gave the tranny a spin and slid on into
The Stinky Pinky Gulp N' Guzzle Big Rig Snooze-A-Stop.
There I was browsin' through the latest issue of "Throb",
when I saw Bambi starin' at me from the back of a milk carton.
Well, my heart just dropped.
So, I decided to do what any good Christian would.
You can not imagine how difficult it is to hold a half gallon of moo juice
and polish the one-eyed gopher when your doin' seventy-five
in an eighteen-wheeler.
I never thought missing children could be so sexy.
Did I say that out loud?

Yes, a lap dance is so much better when the stripper is cryin'
Yes, a lap dance is so much better when the stripper is cryin'
Well I find it's quite a thrill
When she grinds me against her will
Yes, a lap dance is so much better when the stripper is cryin'

All lyrics by SID :-*. I rarely listen to other languages (unless I get really tired of Japanese songs :P).

Especially these parts from my all-time favourite song:
"Wavering, you chose your path Writhing, you regret your path"
"So don't you laugh anymore Cry your heart out here"
annnnd
"As for a destination to aim for Let's create one together"

P!nk's lyrics always really speak to me, but I also adore Bowling For Soup's stuff. From "Only Young":

Nothing to do
But sit around and make a mess with you
Watching the world
From the rooftop looking down
We never care
Summertime and we ain't going anywhere
No goodbyes...

We're only young... running wild!
Only young... get it right!
We've got all the time in the world tonight!
We're only young... you and I!
Only young... let it ride!
Right here... the best night of our lives!

Let's go down in flames
Tomorrow's just a million miles away
We got tonight
So let's tear this town apart
We'll never change
We'll party like it's graduation day
No goodbyes...
We'll stay right here...
Laugh til we cry...

We're only young... running wild!
Only young... get it right!
We've got all the time in the world tonight!
We're only young... you and I!
Only young... let it ride!
Right here... the best night of our lives!

(Tonight tonight) We'll make some history
(Tonight tonight) We'll burn some memories
(Tonight tonight) Legends never die
(Tonight tonight) It's like a movie
(Tonight tonight) The way it should be
(Tonight tonight) All we've got is time...

We're only... and we don't care
If we get old... and lose our hair
Right now... the best night of our lives!

We're only young... running wild!
Only young... get it right!
We've got all the time in the world tonight!
We're only young... you and I!
Only young... let it ride!
Right here... the best night of our lives!

Sex is on fire, I'm the King of Leon
And Louis, beyond the truest
Hey, teacher, teacher, tell me how do you respawn the students?
And refresh the page and restart the memory?
Respark the soul and rebuild the energy?
We stopped the ignorance, we killed the enemies
Sorry for the night demons that still visit me
The plan was to drink until the pain over
But what's worse, the pain or the hangover?
Fresh air, rollin' down the window
Too many Urkels on your team, that's why your wins-low

A glimpse into the mind of Walbuls... not sure if that was a good or bad thing. :V

also, a song I like the lyrics of, as I often think about how on the grand scheme of things we're largely insignificant (which may sound somewhat emo, but in my thinking it's really the opposite :V):
Spoiler:
Like a grain of sand
Swallowed by the desert
Like a drop of rain
That falls from darkened clouds

I am overwhelmed
I stand here awed and humbled
At the feet of giants
Whose shadows stretch for miles

Staggering and infinite
And full of ageless grace
The universe seemed limitless
Without any time
Without any place
Staggering and infinite
The beauty of it all
I feel insignificant
Never have I ever felt so small

Like a century
That passes in a day's time
Like an endless loop
That shudders to a stop

The world redefined
An existence without boundries
I am overcome
I am lost within it's scale

Staggering and infinite
And full of ageless grace
The universe seemed limitless
Without any time
Without any place
Staggering and infinite
The beauty of it all
I feel insignificant
Never have I ever felt so small

Like a drop of rain
Swallowed by the desert
Like a grain of sand
That sinks beneath the waves

Even the greatest peak
Will one day wear to nothing
Even the deepest sea
Will one day dry to dust

Staggering and infinite
And full of ageless grace
The universe seemed limitless
Without any time
Without any place
Staggering and infinite
The beauty of it all
I feel insignificant
Never have I ever felt so small

It began when they come took me from my home
And put me in Death Row,
Of which I am nearly wholly innocent, you know.
And I'll say it again
I..am..not..afraid..to..die.

I began to warm and chill
To objects and their fields,
A ragged cup, a twisted mop
The face of Jesus in my soup
Those sinister dinner deals
The meal trolley's wicked wheels
A hooked bone rising from my food
All things either good or ungood.

And the mercy seat is waiting
And I think my head is burning
And in a way I'm yearning
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
A tooth for a tooth
And anyway I told the truth
And I'm not afraid to die.

Interpret signs and catalogue
A blackened tooth, a scarlet fog.
The walls are bad. Black. Bottom kind.
They are sick breath at my hind
They are sick breath at my hind
They are sick breath at my hind
They are sick breath gathering at my hind

I hear stories from the chamber
How Christ was born into a manger
And like some ragged stranger
Died upon the cross
And might I say it seems so fitting in its way
He was a carpenter by trade
Or at least that's what I'm told

Like my good hand I
tatooed E.V.I.L. across it's brother's fist
That filthy five! They did nothing to challenge or resist.

In Heaven His throne is made of gold
The ark of his Testament is stowed
A throne from which I'm told
All history does unfold.
Down here it's made of wood and wire
And my body is on fire
And God is never far away.

Into the mercy seat I climb
My head is shaved, my head is wired
And like the moth that tries
To enter the bright eye
So I go shuffling out of life
Just to hide in death awhile
And anyway I never lied.

My kill-hand is called E.V.I.L.
Wears a wedding band that's G.O.O.D.
`Tis a long-suffering shackle
Collaring all that rebel blood.

And the mercy seat is waiting
And I think my head is burning
And in a way I'm yearning
To be done with all this measuring of truth.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth
And anyway I told the truth
And I'm not afraid to die.

And the mercy seat is burning
And I think my head is glowing
And in a way I'm hoping
To be done with all this weighing up of truth.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth
And I've got nothing left to lose
And I'm not afraid to die.

And the mercy seat is glowing
And I think my head is smoking
And in a way I'm hoping
To be done with all this looks of disbelief.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth
And anyway there was no proof
Nor a motive why.

And the mercy seat is smoking
And I think my head is melting
And in a way I'm helping
To be done with all this twisted of the truth.
A lie for a lie
And a truth for a truth
And I've got nothing left to lose
And I'm not afraid to die.

And the mercy seat is melting
And I think my blood is boiling
And in a way I'm spoiling
All the fun with all this truth and consequence.
An eye for an eye
And a truth for a truth
And anyway I told the truth
And I'm not afraid to die.

And the mercy seat is waiting
And I think my head is burning
And in a way I'm yearning
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
A life for a life
And a truth for a truth
And anyway there was no proof
But I'm not afraid to tell a lie.

And the mercy seat is waiting
And I think my head is burning
And in a way I'm yearning
To be done with all this measuring of truth.
An eye for an eye
And a truth for a truth
And anyway I told the truth
But I'm afraid I told a lie.

Here's an unusual one for me (it's country), but it's such a great song.

Tim McGraw - If You're Reading This
Spoiler:
If you're reading this
My momma's sittin' there
Looks like I only got a one-way ticket over here
I sure wish I
Could give you one more kiss
And war was just a game we played when we were kids
Well I'm laying down my gun
I'm hanging up my boots
I'm up here with God and we're both watching over you

So lay me down
In that open field out on the edge of town
And oh my soul
Is where my momma always prayed that it would go
If you're reading this
I'm already home

If you're reading this
Halfway around the world
I won't be there to see the birth of our little girl
I hope she looks like you
I hope she fights like me
And stands up for the innocent and the weak
I'm laying down my gun
I'm hanging up my boots
Tell dad I don't regret that I followed in his shoes

So lay me down
In that open field out on the edge of town
And oh my soul
Is where my momma always prayed that it would go
If you're reading this
I'm already home

If you're reading this
There's gonna come a day
When you'll move on and find someone else and that's okay
Just remember this
I'm in a better place
Where soldiers live in peace and angels sing amazing grace

So lay me down
In that open field out on the edge of town
And oh my soul
Is where my momma always prayed that it would go
If you're reading this
If you're reading this
I'm already home

First song that popped into my mind:
Hush, little baby, don't say a word,
Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird.
    If that mockingbird don't sing,
Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring.
If that diamond ring turns brass,
Mama's gonna buy you a looking glass.
If that looking glass gets broke,
Mama's gonna buy you a billy goat.
If that billy goat won't pull,
Mama's gonna buy you a cart and bull.
If that cart and bull turn over,
Mama's gonna buy you a dog named Rover.
If that dog named Rover won't bark.
Mama's gonna buy you a horse and cart.
If that horse and cart fall down,
You'll still be the sweetest little baby in town.
So hush little baby don't you cry,
'Cause Daddy loves you and so do I.

the English translation is not very good :P

I'm not afraid of you anymore
You're all my life now
I live your breath that stays here
And that I consume day after day
I can't divide myself anymore between you and a thousand seas
Now I can't be still and wait for you
I, who have been here for you
In whichever far off city
Only by instinct knowing how to love you
Alone and now always with you
I can't divide myself anymore between you and a thousand seas
I can't be tired of waiting for you now
No, my Life, no
I can't bear love
Either come back or stay
I don't live anymore
I don't dream anymore
I'm afraid
Help me
my Life, no
I don't believe you my love
You leave me and still
you swear that
it's the last time
It's better if I don't trust
Aaah Uuuh
OH Uh Ooh Ooh Oouh
Aaah Uuuh
In the night I search for your reflection in each star
But all of this isn't enough for me, now I grow
Uuh
No, my Life, no
I can't bear love
Either come back or stay
I don't live anymore
I don't dream anymore
I'm afraid
Help me
my Life, no
I don't believe you my love
You leave me and still
you swear that
it's the last time
It's better if I don't trust
Aaah Uuuh
OH Uh Ooh Oouh
Aaah Uuuh
I can't divide myself anymore between you and a thousand seas
Now I can't be still and wait for you
I can't divide myself anymore between you and a thousand seas
