Re: My favorite Sherlock Holmes incarnation
Sure I know that, that's why I wouldn't call him an idiot at all but he is not that much of a bright thinker as Holmes is.Magical Mystery wrote: In defense of Watson!
He was not written as a bumbling idiot, like the ones you see on TV, screen or hear on radio, that was the invention of those particular media to create comic relief in the story - especially during the later portrayals of Watson by Nigel Bruce.
Granted he wasn't the brightest person, but he was still smarter than Inspector Lestrade. Also, with Holmes's tutelage he began to understand things more clearly.
Damn that's really old stuff I still try to get my hands on.MaitreDétective wrote: I like the Nigel Bruce portrayal...
They aired it a year ago past midnight ^^ and I watched it but poorly there wasn't a VCR around -.-
Comparing all the different "seasons" of Sherlock Holmes TV Shows and Movies is really difficult.

Lots of the really old-school is public domain and can be found on the internet archive here:
http://archive.org/search.php?query=sherlock%20holmes%20AND%20mediatype%3Amovies
This includes many of the old movies and some of the old '50's TV series. They have a mixed bag on there so you have to check out and make sure it's a movie or TV episode.
One more thing - the quality can vary.
If you like Sherlock Holmes you'll probably find these interesting.

Jeremy Brett is the best Holmes--he had it all. A genuinely nice and interesting guy, too. I marathon the entire Granada series annually and have for seven or eight years now.

EDIT: Huh, apparently a 13 year-old Charlie Chaplin was in that stage play.

Re: My favorite Sherlock Holmes incarnation
I haven't seen other Holmes reincarnation aside from Robert Downey Jr's and Benedict Cumberbatch's version, so I don't know if it qualifies me to choose which ones are my favorite. So far, I like Downey's for his rogueness and very witty delivery, while I like Cumberbatch's for his unique approach as Sherlock, so I can't decide which one is my favorite.
I heard that Jeremy Brett's Sherlock is among the most acclaimed interpretations. Unfortunately for me, I can't seem to find any copy of that version. I really, really want to watch it.

If you're in the U.S., it's at a bargain price of just over $100 on Amazon:meitantei_mayu wrote: I heard that Jeremy Brett's Sherlock is among the most acclaimed interpretations. Unfortunately for me, I can't seem to find any copy of that version. I really, really want to watch it.![]()

I'm sure prices are similar elsewhere in the world.

Unfortunately, customs and delivery fees will kill my budget since I live in Asia.Jd- wrote:If you're in the U.S., it's at a bargain price of just over $100 on Amazon:meitantei_mayu wrote: I heard that Jeremy Brett's Sherlock is among the most acclaimed interpretations. Thanks for the link, Jd. I might asked my brother if he could get me one since he will be flying to Canada soon. It might be easier and cheaper to get it from there, if Amazon delivers to Canada that is...

Re: My favorite Sherlock Holmes incarnation
Watson was anything but dim. His thought processes were different from Holmes entirely. He wasn't a genius like Holmes was, but he was a doctor. And even in the 1800s they didn't just give medical degrees to just anyone. He was quite smart, and quite fit, just coming off of deployment in Afghanistan if I recall correctly. He was anything but a bumbling idiot.
In my humble opinion, the Nigel Bruce portrayal was quite possibly the worst of all the Holmes depictions. Watson was horrible, and Holmes was depicted as a well kept gentleman. Holmes, according to SACD, was anything but. He was gruff, unpersonable, looked down on anyone, and the only person capable of getting close to him was Watson. Even his brother wasn't close to him.
Jeremy Brett probably depicted the stories the best. However, in terms of depicting Holmes and Watson themselves, I'd give it to Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr versions. Probably the latter a BIT more in terms of appearance and overarching personality, and the former for depiction of thought process and interpersonal relation. RDJ was simply too over the top at times, and Cumberbatch is too restrained at times, though I always attributed that to him holding back a bit more for modern depiction.

Re: My favorite Sherlock Holmes incarnation
Nigel Bruce's portrayal didn't start off like that, he became more of a buffoon as time went on. He was also doing the radio shows ("The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" (1939 - 1947) with Rathbone through 1946) at that time. The comic element found it's way to the screen through the radio shows (and vice-versa).kyuuketsuki wrote: Watson was anything but dim. His thought processes were different from Holmes entirely. Here is a list of the Rathbone/Bruce movies:
1. The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939)
2. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939)
3. Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror (1942)
4. Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon (1943)
5. Sherlock Holmes in Washington (1943)
6. Sherlock Holmes Faces Death (1943)
7. The Spider Woman (1944)
8. The Scarlet Claw (1944)
9. The Pearl of Death (1944)
10. The House of Fear (1945)
11. The Woman in Green (1945)
12. Pursuit to Algiers (1945)
13. Terror by Night (1946)
14. Dressed to Kill (1946)
