How do we proceed here? Do you have a plan on how to do this?

well, the basic idea is, as noted above, to pick a good book or short story that is accessible to all. there are a number of questions

1) should consideration be given to how many people have already read it (in both the negative and positive senses).
2) how should the selection work. it could come from above, it could come from a discussion, or it could come from "rotating-above", by which i mean that the choice of which book to read alternates from person to person.
3) should their be a specific genre/theme. given that this is a DC forum, a detective theme is an obvious one.
4) somewhat related to 2)- should there be any hierarchy or structure; some will say that that will help give it shape; others will say that  will make things too artificial and forced.
5) should it include only public domain books or should it have both those and also books that are under copyright and must be purchased if they are owned already.

there are plenty of others, but those are what spring to mind, with 1) and 2) being especially important.

If you don't have a book and we want  to read it you have to buy it if you want to discuss is with all of us.
Of course there should be a limit to how expensive the book should be (allowance and all that stuff).
For the genre I would say we can cover everything from detective to mystery :) And of course we have to read at least one Holmes :P I demand it! The books are great.

Well I think everyone can select one book an post it here and after some time we pick up all the titles and make a Poll or something.
Of course would it be better if noone knows who suggested which book.

How about this: we start in the mystery/detective genres and eventually broaden that.  As for selecting them, perhaps we should come up with some ideas and then vote on the best option?

that sounds good.

that being said, there are some potential problems

-the spoiler issue. some detectives stories are not nearly as interesting on the second read, because once you know the trick/method/whatever you are no longer as interested (many are not, but there are enough that do fall into this category that it might be a problem). in deciding what books to vote for people will presumably look around and they may well come across the whole plot and conclusion.
-the "pet" issue. people will propose books they have already read that they like. this can lead to discussion being sort of weird.

to bring up another question i asked before-

-should communication be in real time. This is a trick topic. Doing it in real time (presumably on IRC) is more fun, because talking with people in real time is interesting. However, there are problems- people are often quite worried about saying the “wrongâ€

Sure they are worried but isn't this a great oppurtunity to overcome this fear?

What I am most worried about is the timezone problem. We are all shattered around the world so discussing a book after reading it, or after every chapter is something we need to manage. If we can't manage this there is no way of thinking ahead. The IRC is a good choice for sure we should hold that in mind. And personally I think the weekend is the best time to discuss because mostly everybody has some freetime we just need to check out the right time.

Yeah that pet problem... Discussing books you already read is such a pain. So we need to focus on stuff not everybody has read. If there are less then the hald who had already read that book they can just skip that time and search for other books for the next session.

Commie-Ninja had a good point there you know. We should select some books as vote! Just the people who are in the book club. We can't affort to have this compromised by outsiders or the whole vote will be useless. I think for that we need to talk with the admins and mods for a special group.

I think you all already said what I think too, let me just say that I agree with the real time communication (it'll be hard to find the right time for all of us but I think we can manage it) + it's okay to start with a detective/mystery book (like Holmes) + I think we should vote (after everyone has chosen one title (before we even check if the book is available for all of us?) - maybe completly randomly in the library, if we don't want to discuss a book we've already read (I personally probably wouldn't mind that)??

Can eliminate some of those, or at least temporarily suspend problems.

It is not like this has to be a once a deal thing, sign your name now and are in the club. Should be:

-Book proposed through some method*
-Date to have read it by to open discussion(ie 1 month)
-Discussion period (IRC and forum can be used, easy to post IRC logs)[ie 1 week]
-Rinse and Repeat

People can decide if they want to read the work, if it is not public domain that period then option to buy it (if possible--if not, then always next time). Obviously want to include as many people as would be interested, but is purely optional and shouldn't limit itself trying to be all-encompasing.

Point, "it is not all or nothing" i guess
"Rule through fear of force rather than force itself" - Tarkin Doctrine
"[It] is much safer to be feared than loved" - Nicolo Machiavelli
Most Convoluted DC theory?

uh, yeah. some potential candidates, if anyone is still vaguely interested:

-the murders in the rue morgue: one of the most famous detective stories ever. known for inventing many things about the detective story and for being grotesque.
-the purloined letter: also by poe, less grotesque.
-the blue cross: first story in the well known "father brown" series. known for being prosaic, in the good sense.
