Re: WTF Is Going On Here?
They're... called covers... It's been going on as long as we've had commercial music...
Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal was covered by Alien Ant Farm. B'z has covered Oh! Darling & Let It Be by The Beatles and they've covered This Love by Maroon 5 (albeit mostly in Japanese)... this list could go on for years. Decades, even. All Along the Watchtower was a cover by Jimmy Hendrix of the great Bob Dylan's original... The Beatles' Twist and Shout was actually a cover, etc etc etc.
Have you really never heard a cover before now?

Re: WTF Is Going On Here?
Sometimes, a good cover can exceed the original. Case in point, in my opinion, is Noel Gallagher's cover of There is a Light that Never Goes Out. The original by The Smiths is one of my all-time favorite songs, but--to me--Noel's version invests it with an all-new majesty.
The thing to take away from this is that covers RAWK.

Cool. If you listened to MiChi's cover for Sk8er Boi, it is better than the original too.

I prefer Placebo's version of Running Up That Hill instead of the original.

Almost EVERYONE I know of prefers that version over Kate Bush's version. She's got a nice voice, but I guess it's a little too weird for most people.kkslider5552000 wrote: I prefer Placebo's version of Running Up That Hill instead of the original.
Now, if you want one of the most hilarious covers of all time, from what is without a doubt the greatest cover album of all time...

As someone who thinks Noel Gallagher is one of the biggest musician d-bags on the planet, to say I am enjoying the Gallagher brothers tiff would be an understatement.ranger wrote: Noel Gallagher... *drools, foolish Liam to even argue with him, new Oasis shall never be the same![]()

Are you a Blur fan then? If so, I like Blur/Damon even more than Oasis/Gallagher brothers!CarpetCrawler wrote:As someone who thinks Noel Gallagher is one of the biggest musician d-bags on the planet, to say I am enjoying the Gallagher brothers tiff would be an understatement.ranger wrote: Noel Gallagher... *drools, foolish Liam to even argue with him, new Oasis shall never be the same![]()

Re: WTF Is Going On Here?
There's really nothing new going on at the moment, though--they've just never gotten along. Non-Oasis fans don't really understand it, but the more you see of them together, you can tell they're just two brothers both trying to be their own man. For so long, they had to put up with one another because they were stuck (despite several band exits along the way until the latest one). As Noel allowed Liam, Andy, and Gem to gradually contribute more and more of their own songs, the dynamic of the band changed--not really for the worst, just different. As a result, though, it made the split make perfect sense. I'm looking forward to both Noel's and Liam's next output, because their tunes really aren't that directly compatible these days.CarpetCrawler wrote: As someone who thinks Noel Gallagher is one of the biggest musician d-bags on the planet, to say I am enjoying the Gallagher brothers tiff would be an understatement.

As for them being outspoken, I do and always have loved it. The media has never given them any slack whatsoever and has always pushed them, so seeing them never change for the benefit of the tabloids and wayward music journos is pretty remarkable. The best part is that they just straight up meant it and wasn't really them putting up a front; when they're asked for an opinion or they get in an interview with an aggressive journalist, they throw it right back at them every time. I dunno how familiar you are with the Brit media, but this is what they do; they willingly antagonize themselves just to get the best story possible. Oasis was never about playing the game--they turned down more than one nationwide US tour just because of the baggage that entails with innumerable local TV & radio commitments and such. Given that Oasis was one of the few bands to break out from Britain and into the rest of the world during the big Britpop era, I don't think it's much surprise that they've always gotten the worst of it.
All I can say is that, if I were in a band with my brother, it would be far worse.

People put a lot on Liam & Noel for speaking their minds, but don't give Damon much slack, either. He made sure to note often that too many local bands were imitating Blur and that the indie scene had a lot to thank them for; any chance he had to give himself a pat on the back, he'd gladly oblige. Unfortunately for Damon, though... he just wasn't very convincing. He didn't look or have the spirit of the quintessential rock star, so he never was really able to get that to take off.
As an aside, I'd like to throw in Noel & Liam's take on piracy, because I really couldn't agree more:
Noel: "If people are willing to have faceless CDs like that in their collection, good for them. It would be absolutely ludicrous for a rock-star to demand that people pay money for albums because the kids haven’t got that much money to pay for an album, so if they can find it for free, go ahead!"
Liam: "Downloading’s the same as what I used to do – I used to tape the charts of the songs I liked off the radio. I don’t mind it. I hate all these big, silly rock stars who moan – at least they’re ****in’ downloading your music, you ****, and paying attention, know what I mean? You should ****in’ appreciate that – what are you moaning about? You’ve got ****in’ five big houses, so shut up."
I own every Oasis release--including the Japanese version of two singles (The Shock of the Lightning & Whatever) that cost me a pretty penny; especially the latter--outside of five singles, all of which I plan to pick up in time.

Re: WTF Is Going On Here?
It's funny how like Liam and Oasis idolized The Beatles/Lennon (for Liam), and thought they were the reincarnation of them...when they really didn't sound anything like them - they were definitely more like the Stones, and Blur was like The Beatles.
Damon being a wuss...well he's definitely not as expressive as the Gallaghers; I've always pictured Oasis as a bunch of drunken hooligans while Blur kind of like the proper elitist bunch...I don't dislike any of them for their personalities, it's simply just a musical preference; I find Damon's works exhilarating, especially the transition from the early Britpop days with Parklife to the indie low-fi with 13 and Think Tank.
To be honest, I think he was rather embarrassed with his early Britpop days, I admit, he looked retarded with that bowlcut haircut and how he always pranced around in music videos - he was bored of that type of style, and wanted to differ the musical taste, explaining the huge contrast in albums and the creation of Gorillaz. Same thing happened with Brett Anderson of Suede, dunno if you ever listened to his music, but he was this androgynous creature that was constantly on drugs and he admits to being embarrassed to his past actions.
Damon definitely isn't your typical rock star, I'll give you that, his interviews are all horrible because he has this awkward demeanor, lol. That's what I like about him personally, he's not your typical celebrity, he created the virtual band Gorillaz as a big "F U" to all the shallow and hypocritical bands during that time and what was airing on MTV.
Love me some Oasis, I have every album, but my god, there was a giant drop, at least in my opinion, between Morning Glory and Be Here Now. I freaking loved Definitely Maybe, my favorite album of all, but man...Be Here Now just felt like this bloated rock ballad...and then Standing on the Shoulders of Giants...not going to lie, I thought that was pretty damn bad. Even Hindu Times wasn't that great; However Don't Believe the Truth I feel was a step back in the right direction, and Dig Out Your Soul is pretty good I guess. Plus the fact that Liam has no friggin clue how to take care of his voice so he sounds like a 60 year old grandma these days is another reason why I don't like Oasis more than Blur, he can sing barely any of the oldies now, and has to rely on Noel to sing them - She's Electric would be incredible live with Liam at vocals...

Re: WTF Is Going On Here?
Must-see video of Noel talking about Be Here Now
It's an amazing video. To me, Be Here Now's definitely not WTSMG, but I love it all the same. It was really the product of madness. I actually agree with about everything you said, but Liam's voice is definitely a problem. He sounds great in the studio but live, he just doesn't care at all. He never showed up or volunteered for any soundchecks on the last tour; Noel did them all himself as far as I know.
Liam's scruffy voice has given some new attitude to some of the older tunes; I love how he sounded on Lyla & Morning Glory on the last tour. It was rough as hell.
BONUS!
Another Be Here Now mention on the All Around the World bit.

Re: WTF Is Going On Here?
Have you ever watched this documentary?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_Forever:_The_Rise_and_Fall_of_Brit_Pop
My brother showed this to me a couple years back, it's really interesting!
DYKWIM is a good song, I like it - except for the crap in the beginning, lol, all that static and choppers gets really annoying
I didn't really think the main issue was the length of the songs, I mean look at Champagne Supernova, shit's amazing and like 200 hours long.
Here's two songs that I like both by artists which I guess are more rare, I like it when they collaborate with other artists, I've heard the rumor that Noel was going to make a super band a while back..what ever happened to that? Damon's done it like a billion times with Gorillaz and The Good, The Bad, and the Queen. Damon + Noel super group?!

Re: WTF Is Going On Here?
Here is one of my favorite covers:
Steve Vai - Little Wing
Oh did I mention it also had been covered by a little known Japanese guitarist... But perhaps you have heard of him... One Mister Takahiro "Tak" Matsumoto
Hm... Yes... Good song... I do very much like Little Wing... The original being done my Jimi Hendrix.
Another grand cover was done by Nirvana from a very popular David Bowie.
